Pretty slow for a 4.0 drive. You sure this isn't a 3.0 drive?
Probably slapped new 4.0 stickers/certification on old 3.0 drives

It's definitely a 4.0 drive. For whatever reason, some companies put out some Gen 4 drives with Gen 3 speeds. I haven't figured out why yet either.

https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/n...pacity=2tb

So they can sell 2tb for $84 🤣

So no PS5 then?

It'll work, it just doesn't meet Sony's recommended speed so you might get a message about that after formatting it to your PS5. The only real requirement for the PS5 is that the drive must be Gen4 interface.

PCIe Gen4 just means that it conforms to the 4.0 spec/speeds. The underlying controller and flash memory might be the same as would be used on a Gen3 SSD, but the PCIe transceivers and circuitry would have to be faster for Gen4.

The truth is that most people won't notice any difference between a Gen3, Gen4, or Gen5 SSD. Maybe Kingston figures that consumers only want to see the PCIe Gen and the capacity on the specs. Or maybe it's because the PS5 requires Gen4, but doesn't actually seem to need Gen4 speeds, and so this product exists to provide an inexpensive SSD that will enumerate as a Gen4 PCIe device.

This is just a guess on my part, but perhaps lower speeds would mean lower temperatures which would be very desirable in non desktop environments, where heatsinks are not an option.

A lower amperage would have a lot more impact on lower temps. Though slower speeds could allow it to run at lower amps.

It seems like if one does not require a Gen 4 drive, the Intel 670p at $80 (NewEgg, MicroCenter) is a better choice. Toms Hardware doesn't have good review for the NV2.

I've read that this drive runs hot. I guess it is good for storage. Maybe the $79.99 price is for prime only?

The use case here is for applications with no space for a heatsink, or where efficiency is prioritized (laptop, etc).

Gen 4 SSDs are designed with newer PCIe 4.0 interface which provides higher bandwidth and improved performance compared to the older PCIe 3.0 interface found in Gen 3 SSDs. This often results in a more efficient and cooler operation, even when comparing SSDs of the same speed. Keep in mind that not all Gen 4 SSDs will be more efficient or cooler than their Gen 3 counterparts, but on average, you can expect better performance and thermal management from Gen 4 SSDs. Always check the specific specifications and reviews of the SSDs you're comparing to get a better idea of their performance and thermal characteristics.

I'm looking to replace the SATA m.2 SSD in a HP laptop with an Intel i5-1035G4 (the one from this classic Costco deal https://slickdeals.net/f/13524451-costco-members-hp-14-laptop-i3-1005g1-4gb-ddr4-128gb-ssd-win-10-s-280-free-shipping?v=1). I believe at least the CPU in this supports up to PCIe 3.0. So would there be any advantage (performance or thermal) of using a Gen 4 SSD in this vs a Gen 3 SSD? I know that Gen 4 is backward compatible with Gen 3 so a Gen 4 SSD would functionally work in the laptop but only at Gen 3 speeds. For my use case then, would paying extra for a Gen 4 SSD be a waste if it would not be more efficient or run cooler compared to a Gen 3 SSD?

Thanks for any tips.

Great price point, slow though and have to purchase heatsink separate if you plan to use it in a ps5. I am still happy with what I got a few weeks back came with free heatsink after Amex deal $15 off was less than a hundred It's still available but price is $10 more now and when I installed it Ps5 said it tested out at 5300

I wouldn't bother paying more for Gen 4 in your case. A higher end gen 3 would probably serve you better. I recently got the 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus (gen 3) refurbished from Best Buy for $99, but the 1TB is currently available for $39. Only a matter of time until they reduce the 2TB to ~$80
