Absolutely. While it is a generation old, it's still a top 5 CPU for gaming, and more than enough multi-threaded performance for most users. This build should easily last you 5+ years.

But performance aside, this is a great value. The motherboard is worth around $200, the 12700k $300, and RAM $40. So $540 of product for $350.

As a 13900k/3090/DDR5 owner, if I didn't have the need for what I have now, I would have picked this up in a heartbeat (maybe two!).
The processor will still chew up anything you throw at it and I have the z790 version of that board for my 13900k and it is wonderful; packed with good connections and options.
I'd wait for matching RAM to go on sale and then buy at least one more stick but being that RAM is so cheap now I would rather get three and max out the board.
This setup calls for an air cooler if you want stability. I've got a Noctua NH-U12A for mine as these professors are very hot and hard to tame but that fan is like half the price of this system and I think you can be aas with a lower cost one. I would look at the Noctua D-15.
Get the biggest GPU you can afford and throw it into a Fractal case (I love the Torrent) and you're not only good to go, but you'll lead the pack for years to come.

The deal is back! 25+ available in my local store. Should I jump in?
Or is it better to wait for any ddr5 combo?

Isn't i7-12700k compatible with DDR5? I also read that it's better to run 2 sticks of RAM than 4 sticks.
It's not going to realistically matter. 2x16 or 4x8 still gets you to 32 GB. In theory it would be easier to time two sticks on a manual overclock if there is any variation but people who just run XMP or stock. You will notice no difference. the only thing I would recommend is getting the exact same ram that comes with this kit to take it up to 32 GB.

I struggled with the DDR5 (and AM5 vs. LGA 1700) questions myself and had resolved to get a DDR5 board after spending 10+ years with my Ivy Bridge/DDR3 system. While current games don't perform much better with DDR5 than DDR4 as seen in numerous YouTube reviews, future games will be written to take advantage of DDR5. So if one is going to be gaming in the future, they may wish to wait on a DDR5 combo.

I finally realized that I don't game that much and that the only upgrade I really did in the last 10 years was the CPU, and for my use case only $350 for a very *nice* upgrade to my aging PC was just too good to pass up. Because I'm more into motherboards than I am CPUs, I also wanted one of the nicer AMD or Intel chipset motherboards (e.g. Intel Z series), which steered me away from AMD's/Intel's B chipsets which are perfectly good.

The RAM included in the combo is f4-3200c16d-16gvkb, which Thaiphoon Burner reports as using Samsung's K4A8G085W[B/C]-BCPB chips. They are either C-die or lower-binned B-die chips and these sticks probably won't overclock much if at all. I got a $40+ Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 to cool it and the front fan on this dual-fan cooler needs to to be installed a couple millimeters high due to the bulky heat sinks on these RAM modules. I've only had this combo up and running for a couple days and so far I'm happy with it.

Edit: The motherboard shows that it's version 1.3 down in the bottom-left corner. Hopefully, there have been some refinements since the original release.

I think the managers in Microcenter probably didn't expect the combo deal + coupon would be a bad deal for them until people started using it so somebody inside came up with the bullshit excuse to back out of honoring the coupon. It's turned into a bait-and-switch whether they meant it or not. Nowhere in the coupon language said it cannot be combined with discounts/offers. It just said no stacking with other coupons. The combo deal itself is not a coupon (and not seen that way), and they said the coupon is ok for certain 2-item mobo+cpu combo, so the excuse for 3 item combo (+RAM) is a 100% lie.
I yelled at the MC GM for 5 minutes asking him to tell me where in the fine print of the bundle or coupon did it stare it wasn't valid. I got about 50$ of clowning him and telling the cashier his manager was stupid

All of that for $25 off? You must be real pleasant to deal with in real life.

I went for the 13th gen deal with 32 GB DDR Ram. it was a $200 difference but I am hoping it was worth it for the case of performance and future proofing.

Would this considered an slight upgrade or side-grade from an Ryzen 7 3700x with a 640M chipset?

I am looking to upgrade my kids 10+ old intel i5 system, but I can use this and give him my current Ryzen 7 if this better?

The i7-12700k has 50% more compute capability, 4 more cores and is 2 years newer but with much higher TDP than the 3700X.

annoying for people who already have good ram, having to go through the effort to sell this ram. But not a complaint , you can basically just ignore the ram here...

A gigabyte Elite for $150 and a 12700k for $200, extreme no-brainer...

Interesting thought process ... I started from possibly the exact same place as (Sandy Bridge i7-3770 -- which was an upgrade I made from the original i3, and DDR3), but for me it was a no-brainer to pay $200 more ($550) to get their deal that they were advertising at the same time (even on the same web site page!) which has 1) a better processor (13700k), 2) 32g DDR5 (twice as much memory) and 3) a z790 board. Waiting for DDR5 to become affordable was almost half the reason that I waited this long to build a new machine ... why wait ten years since DDR4 came out, then finally buy it literally at its end of life?

If something happens to your board or CPU a couple years down the line, now you are either gonna have to look for an old gen replacement (used on ebay?) or toss this RAM, because future boards and sockets aren't gonna support DDR4, just like all the boards of recent memory didn't support DDR3.

Indeed, the *entire* process, including deciding between the $350 deal vs. the $550 one you got was a struggle for me. Thank God the Micro Center price mistake advertising the latter for $410 today on SD was exactly that - a mistake. I would have thrown myself out the window for missing out on that deal were it for real! Smilie $550 is already a hell of a deal, but $410 would have been insane.

The system I'm upgrading from was originally an i3-2100 on a Gigabyte Z68 mATX with DDR3 which was at first upgraded to an i5-3550 (used eBay) and then just recently to the Xeon equivalent of your i7-3770 (used eBay). So basically almost exactly your system. Big Grin It was originally an MC CPU+mobo bundle deal and has served me well. I imagine I bought that combo near the end of DDR3's life too. One thing that that purchase taught me was not to cheap out too much on the CPU, because that was the only thing I upgraded over the last ten years. So by getting an i7 from the get-go this time, I doubt I'll need to upgrade anything except maybe RAM over the next 8+ years.

I will say one thing about this $350 deal... It's a slightly nicer-tier motherboard than the $550 one and it's got S/PDIF and a good audio chipset, both of which I can use with my old stereo receiver. (It's a Yamaha, and like my old Gigabyte board, it just won't freakin' die!)

Beyond the better performance, one final advantage of the $550 deal is that if you have to buy Windows every time you upgrade, your purchase will give you a couple extra years over mine with the same Windows license. Luckily, I had an old Windows 7 DVD lying around and the code from that worked to activate Windows 11.

Best..
