Overpriced - Yes. I bought my Embody on sale directly from Herman Miller for 1k with all the extras. This was in 2016, I get inflation but the new price is beyond inflation. The same chair I purchased in 2016 for $1050 is now $2020.

Over-hyped - I still don't think so. Due to life happening, at a young age I've always had lower back pain. Sitting down in an office chair never helped either. I researched Embody and decided to pull the trigger on it seven years ago. After adjusting I've never felt back pain sitting down, at least not in this chair. I used to work at an office and sat in multiple chairs depending which office/conference room I was visiting and every chair made my back eventually hurt. A lot of these chairs were very expensive as well. Plenty of online reviews comparing chairs, mostly all reviewers agree Embody chair is great.

I work from home now, and the only thing I would like to have on my Embody is a headrest. Luckily "Atlas Headrests" have made a headrest for it. I'm just waiting for mine to eventually ship.

Would I buy an Embody again? Yes. Would I wait for a bigger sale before buying one? Maybe

Herman Miller isn't the only bad guy here when it comes to over inflating cost, Steel Case has done the very same thing. The Haworth Fern does seem like an interesting option.

It's one thing to pay $1000 for a chair but a chair you haven't even tested? That's insane
Part of the high price, they include return shipping if you hate it. Just roll it back in the box and tape it up.

Returning furniture is no easy task

Was the Gesture $550 bc it was used or open box? Does it have the Steelcase 12 year warranty?

I tried out a bunch of ergonomic office chairs like the HM Aeron and Embody and Steelcase Gesture and Leap. I found the Leap the most comfortable but a new one is incredibly expensive at $1320.
I just bought a refurbished Leap from ebay . $360. It's from Madisonseating. Read through the review and it's a hit or miss on how bad/old the chair is.

Did lots of research on HM years ago. Bought a Mirra 2 and Aeron on Craigslist, both at a fraction of the list price. Mirra 2 was used but in great condition. The owner loved the chair but was upgrading. He had it for a few years. The Aeron was borderline brand new and was for my girlfriend. She had back problems. We both love our chairs.

My advice:
1. Stay away from Madison chairs. They are cheap but not what they say they are.
2. These are expensive chairs for a reason. They are built to last around 20 years.
3. They are super comfortable once you get used to them. They are not for everyone.

Finally, as I understand it, these gaming versions of the regular HM chairs are actually downgrades and an attempt at marketing to gamers. It is known that most gaming chairs are not very good for your back, so they marketed cheaper versions of their chairs to gamers as better alternatives to normal gaming chairs. Good luck finding what you're looking for. Smilie

The Fern seat is not soft enough. It also has that empty feel behind your sacrum like a lot of chairs, especially with Steelcase ones that literally have a void there. This promotes anterior pelvic tilt.

I was able to solve both of these by slapping a big square of 2" thick Latex from a retired mattress topper on the Fern. It raises me position enough to get some semblance of sacrum support and cushion the glutes nicely.
Sounds like you might like https://www.anthros.com . Don't think any are in the wild yet beyond the couple they take to trade shows.

The testing part for sure that's the benefit with going with local dealers. I have the Aeron (newer design, not classic) and it's the best chair I've ever used. All other cheap gaming chairs sub $300 would fall to pieces after 1-2 years. I got tired of recycling or throwing out these cheap chairs, hurts my wallet and the environment. The Aeron helps with prevent lower back pain and withstand all the abuse. I tried the Embody at the dealer, it can't beat the ergonomics and comfort of the Aeron.

overpriced/ over-hyped, had an Aeron and was not impressed at all the fabric was itchy, lumbar support mediocre, the marketing hype machine is akin to Dyson or Apple products but the lemmings will follow
So what do you suggest then?

I have both the gaming version (at home) and the regular version (office). Both chairs are great with the gaming version having slightly more cushion from what I feel. It has not caused me any issues for my back and I believe both versions have improved the pain I used to have in my back. I did a deep dive into chairs after having five back surgeries and I would recommend either version to anyone with back pain.

How does this compare to the Steelcase Leap?

I am skeptical that they are exactly the same but - grain of salt - I spoke with an HM rep in-person the other day and was told that the Logitech gaming model of the Embody is the same model as the normal version.

Why is this considered a deal? This is so overpriced for what you get!

Just buy from someone that sells decommissioned office chairs locally. I have a steelcase leap v2, that I got refurbished on eBay for like $300
