Eh ? one method, you holding the saw against a square that you are holding up against the board. The other method is riding on rails on both sides that are screwed down. This is the same difference as someone shooting off hand standing up vs sitting down on a shooting bench using sand bags. There is far more than "Zero reason" to use a more stable buttoned down method over another method with more variables to it. You might have some super, uber skill but to many of us that aren't quite so superman, alignment aids like this really does help. Yes I've used a square as a makeshift saw guide but too often when I I confirm square (of the cut) with the square, square it is not. Then out comes the cordless miter saw for me. Maybe this cross cut station might do the same job of getting my cuts square and be lighter than the miter saw. Seeing light between the square and the wood is so incredibly annoying.

This is a really cool thing to have. If you do not have a tablesaw. At $20 I'd buy this if it was for a tablesaw cross cut sled.

Im personally a big fan of the old hold-a-speed-square-against-the-board method, but I might just have to give this a shot to hold me over until a good miter saw deal comes around (when I actually have the money, they never line up)

I do this too, however it depends on how nice/accurate you need the cut to be

If all your doing is cross cuts, like the poster above said, use a speed square. Zero reason to buy this.

I guess if youre needing to make some clean miter cuts and dont have the space or money for a miter saw then this could get you by.

Bought this from Menards ~4 weeks ago for $20 (so technically $18 once you get the 11% rebate thing). I haven't even used it yet but it was too good to pass up on. If you make this yourself and you plan on adding metal rails and stuff, it would probably end up being more than $20.

Doesn't always work. What if the wood piece is only 3 inches long and you need to cut it in half? I don't see a safe way of doing that with a speed-square because when you hold the square with your hand, the speed-square would just flop around (on 1.5" of wood), and your hand holding the square is literally next to the saw blade which is pretty dangerous.

This wouldnt help with that either, the clamps on the base wouldnt hold a piece of wood that small, meaning youd have to hold it dangerously close anyway.
Thats a job for a hand miter saw, not a circular saw no matter the setup.

Why would you need to hold the wood? You put the piece of wood against the back of the fence, and when you saw into the wood and push the saw forward, the wood is pressed back against the fence - so that piece of wood is not going to move.

Most circular saws these days have a load safety, so you cant start the saw with the blade against the piece of wood and start the saw. You have to start the saw under zero load. With that safety feature, the saw would likely vibrate the frame enough to cause the wood to shift.
Additionally, circular saws cut "bottom up" meaning the second you tapped the blade against a free piece of wood it would shoot it upwards into the fence of the saw.

Yes - I see your point. I have 2 circular saws and 2 track saws and the blades do spin upwards. For this Kreg however you can "hold" the wood in place by using the metal rails. The height of the Kreg station's cutting surface to metal rails is 1.75" and if you have you have a 1" piece of wood to cut, you can put another 0.75" piece of wood on top of it to have it tightly pressed by the metal rails - at which time you can just drive your saw into it without the wood moving up.
