It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

No offense, but the gateway is way more powerful than an 8th gen low power cpu...
Build quality would be better on the dell though.
The cpu difference between 8th(1200) and 11th gen Intel(1400) is 20% in the real world geekbench and web browsing. I can confirm this cuz I have this GW and Refurb Dell. The amount ram matters more.
The only thing about refurb dell is the battery health. new batteries are 30-60 bucks
Thank you. I'm looking at the Dell 5490 i7, asssuming thats what you meant. It seems these come with both sata and Nvme and the page on their site doesn't say which one this has. It also seems quite heavy - 3.5lb for a 14", and the Walmart Vaio is 3.9lb for 15" and nvme, but its not backlit, and I'm pretty sure a Latitude is much better built.
$250 Dell with 32gb 512gb , Intel 8th gen in 15 inch - do you mean Precision 7520. which is 6th gen cpu, its also a desktop class cpu with high TDP so I'm guessing low battery life, and no webcam.
Intel 6th Gen U going to be 40% slower, Intel 8th Gen U is 20% slower compared to a modern Intel Gen U 11th/12th.
Dell 5000 series is thick with lots of to upgrade. Its more like a desktop replacement.
Dell 7000 series is thinner lighter. the 12.5 inch is 2.8lbs $130 for 8gb/256gb 1080p. $170 for 16gb/512gb 720p.
The 14 inch are 50% off for $150-200 with coupon,
I ordered the $130 model since I already own 2 of these gateways. I loaded one GW with 2TB off ssd and sdcard. I use the dell for outdoors and traveling. I would never take a GW traveling, its too poor built for that.
The only thing to watch out for the dell's battery health, some might be in good condition, new batteries are $30-60. Repairs are super easy, repairs are rare.
VAIO has some reviews on pcmag and notebookcheck.com. It seems ok, i never seen it in person

BTW after increasing the power on mine it won't "boot". It turns on but the display stays blank. Can't access bios anymore either. Trying to figure out how reset bios without popping the battery now.
Not blaming anyone but myself, but a word of caution to everyone else.
Bought one of these several months ago for $250. Works well so far but minimal use. Buyers beware that in the other threads multiple users had issues with the glue coming undone and the casing having issues because of it( Kinda falls apart in that scenario) and multiple users had significant battery swelling over time. (due to overcharging?) I would definitely get the warranty if getting this.

Mine does. Display, charging and USB inputs. I don't even need the power brick, it's a single cable to hook to my whole desktop setup.
same here. I use Dell docking station to connect a 32" [email protected]onally I also connect another 4k @60hz via HDMI. Laptop has no issues driving both monitors at the same time.
However, wifi is limited to 360MBPS or something like that. they put really old wireless card. I have a LAN cable near by. If you really want to use your 1GBPS/ wi-fi 6 connection, this won't work.
Another issue is the battery just died after 9 months.
you can't get a better deal for this price.
This laptop has nothing to do with Gateway. It's made by Chinese company, might as well buy a Huawei laptop
You can not get a Huawei laptop with this price. A rule of thumb is laptops made by reputable phone manufactures are way better and fancier, and more expensive

can you upgrade the wifi module or is it soldered?

Depends on what you want to do.
Gaming and emulation are way better with ITIS Xe… 8th gen igpu blows.
Instead I bought dell refurbished 7300 touch with older i7 , 16gb and 512gb ssd for around $209. So far so good.
They keep coming up on slick deals every now and then.
I love the 7300, the battery last long enough (just lazy to charge or plug in all the time).

Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.
