It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.

I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.

It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.

It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).

Just to let everyone know the ssd drive is sata. Only 550mb per sec transfer.
Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.

Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

I have one of these from an earlier SD.

The spec is amazing for the price, but it's extremely delicate.

The lid is metal, but the entire case is plastic and very flexy, to the point that the touchpad doesn't work if you rest your wrists on the chassis. The plastic screen protector cracks if you sneeze on it.

Other problems: screen doesn't get very bright, and as mentioned, it's somewhat throttled out of the box.
On the good side, Gateway support actually fixed a problem I had with the webcam. I was shocked!

Only recommended if you're very easy on your stuff and don't move it much. If you travel a lot or your current laptop has dents in it, you'll break it quickly.

As a happy owner, I'm looking forward to Gateway releasing a much higher specs laptop that costs slightly more and to jump on that one too 😁

So, following up, I received mine in a big Walmart box with some air bubbled plastic thrown in quite optimistically considering it served little purpose. But the computer box was fine anyway. I'll just say that I'm pleased with the purchase. I wouldn't wish the trackpad on my worst enemy, but I'm not using it much so whatever. The build quality looks suspect, but I won't be carrying it with me everywhere. It's a peppy little machine that runs everything nicely enough for an i5, and even plays Stellaris reasonably well. It's a better buy than a mini-pc of equal power.

There is a lot of light leakage.

I just wanted to mention a few things that may help a few people out...

If you wish to upgrade it to Windows 11, you must be signed into a Microsoft account that you can create easily by creating a free Outlook e-mail account. I thought I would try to go the Yahoo e-mail account route, since you can create a Microsoft account with any e-mail, but Yahoo requires you verify it with an actual phone number (no Google Voice numbers allowed), so I quickly abandoned that plan.

After you've logged into the Microsoft account on the laptop, go to Windows Update and refresh "Check for updates" and soon you should receive the update to actually download and install Windows 11.

IMPORTANT: You need to understand that Windows 11 currently has an issue where it will not allow you to log into the OS after this update, for some reason. You will click on "Sign in" and it will NOT go beyond that, occasionally reverting to the initial splash screen. So please be aware of this! In order to get around this annoyance, follow this video, which didn't work for me but I will tell you what did I had to end up doing...

https://youtu.be/lEhMQQ96K5M

At the time of 1:07 in the video, I had to choose Reset this PC in order to finally be able to get into the Windows 11 OS.

I also highly recommend this fantastic bluetooth mouse that does not require batteries since you can charge it via USB. If you purchased the black laptop, the black mouse goes perfectly with it as it even has the same feel the laptop cover has!

If you need to install Office, and not just a trial subscription, you can go to Kinguin.net [kinguin.net] since they deal in grey market software (which is totally legitimate) and purchase a Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021 installation for around $40! In order to download it, you will need to first log into your Microsoft account on the laptop and then enter the provided Retail Key at the prompt. This software will always thereafter be associated with your Microsoft account in case you need to reinstall it in the future.

4K @ 30fps is not really watchable? What do you mean by that? Are you saying 1080p through HDMI is fine, but 4K @ 30fps is unable to produce a watchable signal.

Had it for a week or so and my wife is totally happy with it. I did a fresh windows 10 install and turned the TDP up to 28000 in the bios. Also put an old sata m2 drive in the addon slot which was super easy to get at. For the price you totally can't go wrong.

This sounds like bullcrap. I own one and have been using it ever since half a year ago. Built quality is not top notch but better than average. Metal lid and nice IPS screen.
Only thing I did was I fresh installed Windows 11.

It doesn't matter. The previous poster's info is wrong. This laptop has Iris Xe Graphics. It's speced at 4K@60Hz thru HDMI and 8K@60Hz thru DP.

I tested the built-in HDMI port and it can do 3840x2160@60Hz and 4096x2160@60Hz. With USB-C to HDMI adapter, I was only getting 3840x2160@30Hz and 4096x2160@24Hz. I think it was because my adapter is HDMI 1.4b. If you use a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 or USB-C to DP, then you should get 60Hz at 4K (and maybe 8K with DP?)
