The misunderstanding is that points are worth 50% more. The product is not 50% off. It would equate to 33% off. 1pt->1.5pt
Same with preferred. 25% more valuable points, means 20% off the product. 1pt-> 1.25 pt
Everyday I see people with a nice expensive apple phone, a car nicer than mine, and they are renting and I am a homeowner
What is your reaction to people who buy iphone, drive a Lexus and who own an expensive home free and clear? So the theory would go like this - the iphone is so much easier to use and the expensive car allows him to cut down his commute that he has been able to reap the benefits into buying an expensive home. So we should make sure we dont leave home without an iphone ;-)

What I can't agree with are the people who think the things they like to spend money on are the only valid things to spend money on, and anyone who disagrees is an idiot.
Apple edu is still better. Keep your points for flights or hotels

Even now, I spend so much fixing and renovating that I'd have a boat today if not for being a homeowner. My wife and I LITERALLY almost took a condo on the water with slips included before we bought our house. I would 100% own a boat today. Being a renter isn't come kind of character flaw, there're plenty of extremely successful people who never buy real estate.

Cash is fungible though, so unless you never fly or stay at Hyatts you're losing money by using the points in lieu of cash for apple products via this deal.

You generally get better value transferring the points to the airline (or Hyatt)- not booking through the portal. For example Hyatt hotels you'll get either 1.25 or 1.5 cents per point, fixed value, in the portal.... price itself is likely going to be similar to direct book. But by transferring those points 1:1 to Hyatt you'll typically get 2-2.5 cents a point for them (and get any elite benefits if you have Hyatt status too). For higher-end airline tickets you'll get even more than that via transfers. Coach fares can be more YMMV.
That said, most travel blogs that have done a bunch of comparisons find the portal prices are usually on par with direct bookings- but not always, as you've found...so for some coach tickets where transfers aren't going to necessarily beat the CSR portal value you'll want to be sure and check both ways... (and consider the other differences in booking one way vs the other- not just status benefits, but the fact the portal is considering a cash booking for earnings purposes while point transfers aren't- and the differences in taxation of the two booking types)
