Depending on your use, 512GB may be a tad small. I have this entry model but w/ a 1TB SSD. Even though I edit everything on external SSDs, 512GB isn't enough. 1TB is my sweet spot to have my apps and important files on the internal drive and not be anywhere near full. Neither the internal storage nor RAM is upgradable. What you buy is what you are stuck with internally.

Also FYI WWDC starts Wed and the M2 Studio launch is anticipated. That should trigger clearance pricing of the M1 models, perhaps w 1TB+ SDDs.

except it doesn't really matter what AMD/Intel has because you'll never be able to buy this rig with anything BUT an Msomething.

The Ultra is on sale too - 650 off - or a little <20% off full retail. I'd like to see that model around 25% off or $3K

Couldn't you return it to Costco if something better comes out? If not, then you jumped on the deal while it's available?

I've always been a Mac guy. But even I admit that having 32GB of RAM while only having 512GB storage is just strange and annoying.
Apple has put gimped memory and storage in everything from phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops for at least 5+ years and now everything they sell is just e-waste as you can't upgrade anything. It should not come to a shock.

I am selling my m2 pro because I just replaced it w/ a mini pc with more power for $400, and I can update: Wifi/BT, RAM, storage, and add SATA all inside. I have tired of Apple's gimping of products where going from 512GB to 1 TB costs them $3 and am no longer supporting this. I am keeping my MBP because IMHO nothing in the windoze realm even comes close.

In any case you can easily expand the storage w/ a TB SSD which will be many times cheaper than Apple's ransom and you can keep it even if you upgrade.

This studio should be enough juice for many years to come for most people, and the price isn't terrible its just 2-3x more than an equivalent PC with the same power except you need to use Windows or Linux. This is a pretty stacked machine (sans SSD).

Until and/or if Apple puts AV1 enc/dec on the chip, it's no bueno for me. My cheapo minipc has AV1 dec, I really want AV1 enc like an Intel ARC.

minisforum NAB6. There are more powerful AMD ones but this one good enough for what I needed and on par with power of the m2 pro. I think I paid $369 then added 16GB for a bit over $30 and a wd black 1TB for maybe $60. So I guess technically 1/3 the price but its 1TB of storage and I am free to upgrade if I wish. It also has 2 2.5Gbit adapters but no thunderbolt. I had no need for TB but the new one coming out has it.

The NPB7 is like $120 more and that will go toe to toe with a studio.

I would wait, WWDC around the corner - possible an M3 version. Or M2 Pro/Max.
M3 won't be announced until next year. If Apple refreshes the Studio this year, it will be with the M2.

I bought this machine a few weeks ago from Costco, last time they had this deal.

I knew exactly what my needs were and this machine is great for me. As for the 512 GB storage space, I have 10 TB of NVME/Thunderbolt storage connected to it, and that's working out great for me.

It's possible that there might be something new released at WWDC which is just around the corner, but it sure as hell wont be as cheap as the price that this machine is currently on sale for.

How do you have your storage connected? Curious!

At the moment, I have 3 NVME drives, 2 x 4 TB in two Acasis Thunderbolt enclosures and a 2 TB NVME in a USB 3.1 enclosure.

There is a new Zen4 AMD one coming out and the 13th gen Intel. The 13th gen intel doesnt really bring anything except USB4/TB so I saved the $120. The Zen4 one is a different gig. It can do light gaming and is like 20% more powerful than the NAB6 (but a few hondo more). https://store.minisforum.com/coll...5372492021

I'm typing this up on the NAB6. I would suggest to get a preconfig (you can always change or add storage) because it comes w/ an SSD cooler AND legit Windows 11 pro.
