Depending on your use, 512GB may be a tad small. I have this entry model but w/ a 1TB SSD. Even though I edit everything on external SSDs, 512GB isn't enough. 1TB is my sweet spot to have my apps and important files on the internal drive and not be anywhere near full. Neither the internal storage nor RAM is upgradable. What you buy is what you are stuck with internally.

Also FYI WWDC starts Wed and the M2 Studio launch is anticipated. That should trigger clearance pricing of the M1 models, perhaps w 1TB+ SDDs.

except it doesn't really matter what AMD/Intel has because you'll never be able to buy this rig with anything BUT an Msomething.

There is a new Zen4 AMD one coming out and the 13th gen Intel. The 13th gen intel doesnt really bring anything except USB4/TB so I saved the $120. The Zen4 one is a different gig. It can do light gaming and is like 20% more powerful than the NAB6 (but a few hondo more). https://store.minisforum.com/coll...5372492021

I'm typing this up on the NAB6. I would suggest to get a preconfig (you can always change or add storage) because it comes w/ an SSD cooler AND legit Windows 11 pro.
Thanks for the info! I picked up a Mac Mini M2 base model for 500 recently but am still within the return period. For my use case I don't necessarily need to stick with the Mac and wanted to see what options that yourself and others liked as an alternative.

Trade off is noise, but the AMD and Intel alternatives are faster (cpu) and expandable. Im probably going to return the studio I got (still not liking mac os) and get the 13th gen intel one + a eGPU (although UM773 is looking attractive) to throw my rx 6800 in for when I want to game.price will end up being about the same overall but gives me options.

The prob w/ these base models is they are e-waste out of the gate. For less money you can get upgradable minipc that you can use for 5-10 years no problem. The only decision is if you are tied to Apple ecosystem. Personally I have a M1pro MBP and I love it. To me there is no laptop that comes close. However on desktop, Macs are outclassed so I went with a minipc. I am OK with MacOS and Windows so its personal preference on the OS, but I am no longer supporting e-waste devices with soldiered down and non-upgradable gimped devices.

Go check out a minisforum NAB6, that is what I purchased. It is more powerful than an m2 pro and has 2 2.5Gbit NICs and supports native AV1 decoding. You can also upgrade the wifi module, NVMe, SATA SSD, and memory on it.

Minisforum is about to launch a Zen4 one that is actually legit and you can do low-res current gaming on it and it will support emulators. Its a more coin but this processor is faster than current Mac ones and supports AV1 decode AND encode. Venus UM790 Pro

People don't realize if you use wifi/BT having an NGFF upgradable component can save you from living w/ old wifi standards.

Now if you use ProRes, you are sorta stuck and Apple likes it that way.

This is a good deal for anyone contemplating an M2 Pro Mac Mini. Although 512GB is small for a pro machine, it's still faster than the drives in the Mini.

Go for a mini PC unless you need macos. They are cheaper and better than what is offered here

Heavy photo/video editing & rendering...etc I was asking the same question. I end up getting an Apple refurb base Mac Studio anyway just a nice thing to have and I expect it to last at least 10 years.

Buy now. 90 day return on computers at Costco. If something drops in the next 3 months that makes it worth spending retail on, then return it. Doubt they'll get much cheaper than this.

If this ever reaches to $1000, I'm pulling the trigger and will wait to buy another possible model in the next 5-10 years

I'm just looking for maximum RAM for large language model training… hope I can get my hands on 64GB at some point.
While M1 Studios are pretty good for that, you should consider a server provider such as Hetzner or see if you have a more local datacenter that provided dedicated hosting. Ends up being better and cheaper if you decide you want to upgrade to dedicated ARM or want to provision CUDA time. Dealing with local hardware and networking issues while training an LLM is a total pain.

So is a mini PC at half the cost. The question boils down to ecosystem and preference. The other thing is a mini pc could be upgrades as needs change, the mac mini is not and hence has a higher chance of becoming e-waste than a mini pc that you can independently upgrade the wifi/memory/RAM.

M1 Max was a beast when it came out and kicked AMD/Intel butt. Now, it's slower than AMD last gen APU. Wait for M3 to come out.
