Bought in november 2021 for $190 😭
Same price at Samsung if your military, Vet, etc.

The 980 Pro with heatsink is $9 more at Samsung for same buyers. They offer pickup at Best Buy where available too.
Was waiting for a PS5-compatible deal for an SSD with DRAM. Thanks OP.

Question : How do I get my current drives data onto the new drive? Previously, I would use a USB to Sata adapter and have both drives on the system to run cloning software. Now, I am not sure how this works...

I've googled, but most places just say "make sure to backup your old drive beforehand". That doesn't really help me...

Download the Samsung magicians and data migration program. There are instructions on the site on how to use the program. YouTube might have some videos too.

Seeing more 1TB drives at $40, I'd say HODL DA LIME.

Edit: actually, the new price is now $60 across the board. With EPP/EDU, price is now $10 cheaper.

Should I bother getting this for a older laptop or will it not have fast speeds with my old motherboard?
HOW old? Older systems are generally Gen 3. Newer systems are Gen 4. You need to check your laptop specs.
If Gen 3 (likely), NO Gen 4 drive like this one, will do any better than a decent Gen 3 drive. I have a Gen 3 system, have both x3 and x4 drives, so know that for a fact after extensive testing.

In addition, very fast drives tend to run HOT, often needing heat sink cooling and air movement. This may not be feasible in a laptop. A less 'demanding' drive (Intel 670p, Crucial P3, Samsung 980/non-Pro, Solidigm P41, etc) may be far better, and cheaper, with no real loss of performance.
Power generally=heat, and power/heat means less battery run time for a laptop.

Its now $59.99 and $69.99 with the heatsink. Is it worth getting the one with heatsink for $10 extra? My current M.2 boot drive doesn't have heatsink and its been doing well for about 5 years but its a 256gb drive.

These are likely a higher performing drive with additional heat issues.
An aftermarket heatsink will set you back ~$10 anyway.

So you are currently using a 2.5" SATA drive, and want to move to nvme? If so, just put the NVME drive on your motherboard, then use samsung to clone. after its finished turn of the computer and unplug your 2.5 SATA drive.

if you are trying to clone nvme to nvme, you have to buy an external dock or usb case.
