I watched it so others don't have to. TLDW: most dishwashers do a pre-wash rinse cycle for 15 minutes or so, which gets most of the big particles, then drains. Most dishwashers also have a location in the detergent door for pre-wash detergent. Pod users will likely ignore the pre-wash as it's often a small compartment that wouldn't fit a pod, and if it did fit the pod, that'd be two pods per wash cycle ($$). Since the pre-wash is then done without detergent, whatever detergent (pod) is used has to work harder and dishes are not as clean.

He did say powder works best. Also dirt cheap and lasts forever.
Not sure but in my experience, theree worked better than powder.... Powder usually leaves some powder on the dishes while these made dishes sparking clean... Maybe my dish washer is different?

I have a Bosch (and it reco pods) and what I do to get 100% clean dishes every time

1. Don't prerinse
2. I put a shot of Cascade gel in the tub (maybe 4-5 mL). A $10 bottle lasts over a year
3. Use said pods from BJ's/Sam/Costco (at much cheaper rate than this)
4. 100% use rinse aid
5. Clean out the strainer trap (big particles, brush every few months)
6. Use washer cleaner (Affirm) once every few months -- esp if you have hard water

The biggest change was putting the shot of cascade gel in, it really reduced protein sticking to dishes in the initial wash (before the pod is released). Affirm I use because we have hard water and don't want to wear down the pumps prematurely with deposits. With said hard water if I dont use rinse aid forget it dishes look lie crap. I make my own from restaurant concentrate for maybe $1/32oz (versus $10).

That is suspect for a few reasons:

1. Phosphate cleaners are bad for the environment (cause algae bloom) and have been outlawed in most cleaners and jurisdictions.
2. TSP etches glass.
3. TSP is an industrial cleaner and it will brittle plastics (of which many part of your dw are made) at high temperatures (like in a dishwasher)
4. TSP is very basic (many cleaners are but there is a balance) 11-12 pH
5. TSP is a lung irritant

Anytime you start mixing chemicals in with different pH than what the dw detergent does you are starting to reduce its effectiveness. So I would say stick w/ dw detergent and put a shot/powder in the tub for preclean (I do) if you feel your dishes aren't coming out as clean.

That's all true but nearly all of the R&D in dishwashing detergent right now is with pods, they are making them more and more potent to compensate for the lack of pre-wash detergent. I get perfectly clean dishes with pods but I will switch back to gel temporarily to see if I get an improvement.

In addition to others comments, I have heard the residue from from the dissolving film that holds pods together can damage or clog the small tubes of your dishwasher over a long period of time. I've used nothing but the Finish Powerball solid pods and rinse agent and for the most part everything comes out completely clean, and if not its from being loaded at an awkward angle or blocked by something else.

I used to use a gel and before that a pod. Dishes were never fully clean, regardless if I used a rinse aid or not.

Switched to powder and haven't had any issues with my dishes since. Also, don't need to use a rinse aid anymore. I have a bosch dishwasher, that recommends pods, but pods were probably the worst offender for me.

All products use the same brand... Cascade.

I did say YMMV, and rinse aids are pretty much a given for hard water areas. Glad power works for you.

Thanks for the advice! Just one thing, what do you mean by "in the tub"? Clarifying before I try anything and screw it all up.

Great video! Thank you! Need to rethink how I use the dishwasher. First run the hot water till it reaches the kitchen and then use powder instead of pacs.

I just put a squirt in the tub (the bottom of the dw), not in any dispenser -- just out in the open. When the dw goes in the prerinse (the first cycle) it will "use" that squirt of detergent to start breaking down the food so when it gets to the wash cycle there is less work to do and the enzymes have had time to work. I dont put a ton, maybe a tablespoon at most.

The pods, powder, gel don't get released from the dispenser until a later cycle. The rinse aid dispenses in the final clean cycle. Some older dw (not Bosch) have an actual prerinse dispenser and you can use that -- but almost all new ones do not so you just squirt it in (or if you use powder just add at tbsp or so)

Funny its like going to a carwash. Some carwashes just spray water as you drive in (the prerinse) or some use foam to get it started. Then you go through the main cycle where they put the soap/etc. Then you get to the final cycle where they add the rinse aid (for no spots), then dry off the car. Its the same thing in a dishwasher for the most part.

I used cascade gel in my Samsung washer and over time the stainless started to get a whitish film on it as well as the dishes.

Eventually that washer died and I got a Maytag and switched to pods. The washer looks brand new on the inside and the dishes especially the glasses have never looked better. We do everything the same except changed from gel to pods. I'm not sure if mine does a pre wash I'll have to look at the door to see if it has a small compartment next to the big compartment. I do hear it drain a few minutes after I start it so maybe it does.

But the gel wasn't working for us.
I saw the same but I had this white film all over the dispenser door to the point it would not open and close without using a toothbrush to clean it.

Yep, if you are using pods you law as well just always use quick wash and skip the pre-rinse cycle. I switched to powder as well.

But machines aren't designed that way and over dosing detergent during the wash just doesn't make sense. It's not a better product, it's a sales technique.
