Seems that "Phat ii" is an active eq. And thats battery compartment in the back. So, this bass sounds that bad Ibanez had to add active boost? Hmmm...

This bass sounds and plays great with a little setup. I returned mine though because the fret spout was pretty bad… fixable if you have the right tools and patience, but I couldn't find my fret file to fix it. A new file is half the price of this bass.

They really aren't very good, but if it gets someone into a new hobby for $200-300, then that's still great. Ibanez still makes some of the better extreme budget basses, but the issue with these super low level basses is they don't grow with you - they essentially become throwaways on the used market. I just looked and there are tons around me with practice amps for $100-150. If someone spent $300-400 getting a decent Cort, Ibanez, Yamaha, Sterling, or Squier they could get an instrument they may want to keep forever. A lot of used Squiers will even come with Seymour Duncan pickup upgrades making the value proposition excellent. They also will never go down in value. A $250 Squier with some Seymour Duncans is never going back down in price, so you'll get your money back out if you sale.

As much as I recommend against them, I'm still glad it's getting people into an amazing lifelong hobby. I've wasted money on worse.

You'd pay about $75-125 for that level of setup and still be left with a bass worth $50-100 on the used market.. That ruins the value of a bass like this. The true entry level in new basses that are finished well and would be appreciated even by an expert is around $350 in my opinion. Below that they have to save somewhere. That almost always means at least cheap tuners that make the instrument poor right out of the box.

This is Ibanez's entry level bass and at $150 it is an absolute steal. Don't listen to the naysayers the GIO series will take you from beginner to intermediate bass playing. Apples to apples you will not find a better deal.

Take the time to learn how to properly set up a bass. There are so many resources on YouTube for doing so. Chances are with rapid environmental changes during transit and the nature of wood, there are going to be some fret sprouting, which a few minutes of sanding will fix.

I bought this bass back in 2020 when I was bored at home in the pandemic. I still can't believe how great it sounds for the price. Highly recommend it, and like others have said, get it set up at your local music store. As a beginner, I learned a lot about what kind of strings I needed to slap properly, play rock versus funk, etc. It'll sound fine out of the box, but a professional will make this puppy sing.

You can fix fret sprout with a regular hardware store file.
There's no reason to pay $50+ for the fancy tools from StewMac unless you're a professional luthier working on $1500+ guitars.

Explanation...

Most guitars made in China or Indonesia, which means every cheap guitar, have some amount of fret sprout.
This is because wood expands and contracts with humidity, and a lot of places in the USA are less humid than Indonesia or China.
Then the neck shrinks slightly, which makes the frets stick out the side of the fretboard a little.
Fix: file down the outside edges of the frets. Take a fine file and run it LENGTHWISE down the edge of the neck at a slightly higher angle than the frets are cut at.
This is easy until you get to the body of the guitar, where I usually don't bother on a cheap guitar because I'm not going to feel them there anyway.
This is a lot trickier with maple fretboards because they're usually sealed with poly and you don't want to nick the finish.
With pau ferro, rosewood, or any dark fretboard that you oil (like this Gio), it doesn't matter if you nick the fretboard a bit. In fact, a lot of people file down the outside edges of the fretboard to make them less sharp!

I agree with you, I've filed down frets before with some mini, fine files I have. Just takes a little time. That being said, I bet dude just got a lemmon and should've tried again. That is the gamble with lower end guitars/bases (inconsistency in quality) so I may recommend going with a Squier too because a lot of times a beginner isn't going to know if he or she has a good one or not until it's too late to return it.
