Watching old content on disc, installing old software on disc, making physical backups as a redundancy for critical files like financial information or family photos.
My car has a CD player..I still burn MP3's for it. Also had to use a DVD to re-install Windows 11
This is 8x for DVDs, and up to 24x for CDs.
It's a slimline or laptop-style drive, which aren't as fast as full-size desktop optical drives.

Wish there was a reliable external blu ray player/burner. They've all died on me quickly, but not soon enough for return. I still have a ton of Verbatim 25GB 4X BD-R discs. I've burned these units with everything from music, to videos, to pdf manuals that are not found anywhere online. So many things that can no longer be found online thanks to the google purge. Everything is purged from their index results. All the burned discs still in prestine condition and never had an issue when accessed to load on replacement hard drives for quick access.

On the other hand, I've had reliable brand usb flash drives error and even disappear files. That drove me nuts.

serious question: what does someone use this for in 2023?
I actually just bought an external optical disc drive a few weeks ago to make backup discs for my slim PS2. Backups are nice if you don't want to put any wear and tear on the originals since, at this point, the better games are collector items.

Anyone can recommend on a utility SW that can back-up music CDs as an ISO (or an equivalent) image, the same way we did with DVDs back in the day? AFAICT, using Windows Media Player to rip CDs only saves them as *.wav or *.mp3 files for individual tracks. But I want a full image.

If the device comes with cloning software such as Nero, the software is worth more than drive.
I bought a Samsung external DVD writer a few years and I have been using the Nero package that came with it. The software allows me to clone or backup on dvd or hard drive.

Question for those that know, would this allow me to rip DVDs from another DVD? Or would I have to download it to my computer first? I have not been able to see that info online. Is that what double layer means?

This is a repeat of a deal back in April. When I posted a repeat of a previous deal (same price) I got down-voted when it was the same price as a previous deal. In other words, all the circumstances were the same as here except for the product yet I got a negative vote.

I would get this deal except I already have one from the previous deal.

That's why I canceled my order in time, I could not find anywhere what type USB this used. I can get many on Amazon for about this same price.
USB 1.1 is over 20 years old. You can bet any external DVD writer is USB2. I don't know about Blu-ray drives.

Short answer is no. That is such a niche use case that I've never heard of it for a consumer optical drive.

You need two drives first and foremost. If you have two drives than yes you could with the right software to go along with this. I have this drive and use it with DVD ripping software to backup complete ISO's on to my computer. With the correct software you could make copies.

Most probably not.

This unit has only USB output. Most modern TVs have HDMI input for video. Most Smart TVs can also read still pictures out of USB drives, but they lack the decoder needed to view movies from a digital bitstream (as what'd come out of this drive).

If you need to connect this as a DVD player to your TV, and the TV does not have the necessary decoder feature, then your option, other than using your computer in the middle, is to try and use a streamer box that accepts bitstreams via USB, and has an HDMI output. IF the TV is very old, and predates HDMI, you'll need a streamer with a composite or components analog video outputs.

In any case, dedicated DVD players are very cheap, especially if you shop your local used market (Craigslist, for example).

On Linux (a linux bootable iso on a flash drive works fine for this) : dd if=/dev/cdrom of=filename.iso

Going to library, borrowing the new Metallica & telling them "I'm not paying your stupid Ticketmaster prices, fix it" burn.

According to the manual on the LG website, it's USB 2.0.

But yeah, hard to find, not even on the product page, just in the manual.

In a world in which your favorite show can disappear off of a streaming service, physical media is the best insurance policy.
