You want a person making 50 to 100k a year changing your oil? Hahaha. You are correct that the tire guys and oil change guys at big shops get paid very poorly. My cousin manages a Chevy service garage. He says they pay those guys $12/Hr.
What state has miniumum wage of $12?

Doing it yourself is not convenient most drivers.

The average driver couldn't tell you where the lug nuts are let alone how to access and remove an oil filter. Plus you must already be invested for a few hundred dollars worth of a jack, jackstands, oil filter wrench (model dependent), oil plug wrench or ratchet and an impact gun- battery or pneumatic.
Everyone can easily do their own oil change and it doesn't require hundreds of dollars of equipment. Get outta here. You can get easily get everything you need for under $100. People are lazy and just like paying for convenience. That's the bottom line

Word of advice: Read the manual and learn to do things yourself. Long gone are the days where you have to change oil every 3,000 miles, most cars now do 10,000 mi depending on what you have. People who designed the cars no way more than these wannabe mechanics, since you know, they have engineering degrees.

I refuse to go to an oil change place when I realized I know more than all these people combined together. If you don't have time to do it yourself, that's understandable and that's your choice. You choose to take that luxury and there's nothing wrong with that. If you don't have time to read the manual, then you're just lazy and deserve to be taken advantage of.

p.s. : I don't have a horse in this race, I have two EVs, I don't need to do oil changes, but just want to pass along something I learned in life.
My last oil change(full synthetic, honda civic)was more than a year ago but I didn't drive much, may be 4000miles. Is it time to change my oil?

i avoid dealership like a cobra snake! They once scammed a neighbor of mine. he had a brand new car at 4000 miles and went for first oil change, they lied and scared him and made him wait 6 hours at the dealer service lobby and scammed $60000 for new brakes, transmissions, etc. after some guys threatened legal action they refunded almost all of it expect for the $40 oil change. told me they replaced his new car parts with older used parts. never changed anything to new.
say NO to" FREE MULTI POINT INSPECTION" that they throw in with oil change coupons. Thats where they get you

Does your friend have an IQ below 50? That is the only way this makes sense. Every new car has at least a 3 year / 36k mile warranty. I think your friend was lying to you.

These deals are usually for 4 or 5 quarts of oil. Any more than that and they rip you for an extra quart especially for synthetic.

absolutely not. even i was told i needed new brakes when my car was at 7k miles once at a toyota dealer. ain't lying! The dealers don't give a crap about warranties or anything. only those who know about their car wraranty parts and services can fight back and expose their scam. most drivers have no clue whatso ever about cars or engines. the scammers know gullible people by their limited english skills, how they talk, the age and how innocent someone looks to scam! This is why I only go to neighborhood independent service shops not dealers for repairs or services. Why do they make you wait 3 to 10 hours for just an oil change at dealers? You wills ee your car just sitting their for hours to make a story about some engine or parts needing fix or replacement.

What are you using an impact wrench for on an oil change???
Average lube tech right there which is why I do not go to those places as an impacted drain plug is a pain to fix

Although Wal-Mart oil change locations are located within Wal-Marts, they operate like optometrist offices attached to a Costco* - they're under a shared roof but aren't necessarily operated by the building owner. As such, there's not a universal Wal-Mart oil change location standard in the way that the aisles and offerings of a Wal-Mart retail store tend to be standardized.

Good luck!

That isn't true at all....I've never seen a Walmart with a third-party auto center.
