Drives with silicon motion controllers like this drive should come with still have a decent sized dynamic cache to absorb large files quickly. It's the same controller crucial uses in the BX500.

Other drives like the PNY CS900 use a phison controller with a small 10GB static cache and typically drop to 100MB/s writes once this fills up on large file writes. Still faster than most people's internet connection and reads are plenty fast enough.

Both drives are adequate for general usage but still a step down in quality, reliability, and longevity compared to a drive with DRAM like an MX500 or 870 EVO. It's also almost half the price though.
It really depends on your use case. This is going to be fine for a lot of applications like secondary storage. Anyway, the SLC cache on this thing is massive at like 660GB. https://www.techpowerup.com/revie...ssd/6.html

I don't know how often people are going to fill a 660GB write cache. My guess is not that often.

SSDs are getting cheap enough that's it's very tempting to buy a bunch to replace the spinning discs in our Home Media Server. Any down side to using these for Music, Family Photos/Videos, Movies, etc? They wouldn't get super heavy use, mostly just to backup the important memories and some movies here and there.

As long as you have a backup for them, like any other drive.

I've heard that the sustained write speeds are kinda weak on teamgroup products but never tried it myself to verify, and probably varies depending on the product. Probably worse with the flash drives though. I think the SSD like this are better.

Anyway the good news is that write would not be common for you. And read speeds are supposed to be no issue, making your use case perfect.

Good buy since Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 upcoming expansion will have SSD requirements.

This is DRAM-less which means initially moving big files -- like games -- over to it initially starts very fast but then hits a wall when the SLC cache is filled. Spend a little more, get one with DRAM.

DRAM is not SLC. You should do some reading before commenting Smilie However, it is true about the pseudo-SLC filling up during large transfers.

You get what you pay for. I had two of the 1tb versions of this drive and they both died in 3 months. I even spent 9 bucks to rma the first one. the brand new one they sent me also died.I didnt bother rma'ing the second. I threw it away at bought a mx500, which I should have done from the start.

honestly with large price drops we've been experiencing across the SSD's, buying the absolute cheapest one is probably not worth it.

I've had this 1TB version in my PC for playing my music. I know its different from running the OS on. I haven't had an issues with it. I would upgrade if it hit $50 or less. LOL
