Micro center has 7700x bundled with mobo and 32gb ram for $450, probably a better deal if you are building from scratch
You'd have to buy new motherboard and RAM to use this CPU. Might as well upgrade up 5800x3d instead.

Ryzen 5 7600X has also price dropped just yesterday to $219 [amazon.com].
Decisions, decisions...
With July 4th and Prime day coming I wonder if these are permanent price drops

I currently have a Ryzen 5 5600x - would this be a good upgrade?

a new mobo could be a decent investment for the am4 platform going forward, but if you cheap out on it, it's just more ewaste. a 5600x to 7600x or 5800x3d isn't a big upgrade, I'd wait another gen, unless you just got into streaming or content creation and need the cpu power now.

What about 10700 to 7700x or 7700x3d

This is a January article but if you plan to upgrade, AM5 overall is cheaper now. If you just want a cheap AM5 gaming system, you can grab a 7600 from AliExpress for $180. DDR5 RAM is dirty cheap. 32GB 6000 CL36 G. Skill X5(EXPO) is $81. Add a $130 B650 and a $30 tower cooler and you're set for a long while.

If you're going with a high end GPU, then upgrade to AM5. If not, use what you have or upgrade your current AM4 to 5800X3D at $290 that's similar performance to the 7600X. However, depending on the games you play, the X3D can be more beneficial.

See my previous post. If you're going to a high end GPU like a 7900XT/XTX or 4080, then upgrading to AM5 makes sense. 5600x and 10700 probably performs similarly enough.

Now make the regular 7700 that price, almost the same performance while running cooler and using less power.

This. The Non X is better in every way, and comes with a nice looking (and nice performing) CPU cooler.

The 7700 non X has been the real gem of the line in my opinion. I bought one, and use it with a 4070ti and still managed to keep my 750w PSU. I probably won't look for an upgrade until the very last X3D chip on AM5 comes out (probably 2025).

The best value will be to wait for Ryzen 8000 launch then buy 7000 cpu and AM5 mobo when they drop prices to clear inventory.

Then Wait for AM6 to be launched and buy the last gen CPU for AM5 and upgrade your ram to the fastest or fastest per dollar RAM at that time.

You can power limit the X cpus. If the X is cheaper buy it and get a better heatsink with the savings.

The X cpus are probably the better silicon.

Couldn't agree more if the price is the same or even less for the X version. When I bought my 7700x it was $30 less expensive than the non-variant. I run it in an eco mode via the BIOS settings, 90W max power consumption.
