Bought this last month for my daughter who is not old enough for a phone but we needed a way to keep track of her in the neighborhood and be able to call her. We are an Apple household, so I set it up on my phone but for a child, which allows me to set parental restrictions on who she can call/text and when it goes into school time mode (which can be required by teachers when they're at school). Basically makes it into a watch.

I'm with T-Mobile and they have a $10 basic plan for watches and with an auto pay discount it knocks it down to $5 a month.

When I was researching other "kids" watches with calling ability, there were some that were a little cheaper (Gab, etc) but the savings on the watch would have been offset by the plans ($15/mo).

As some have mentioned, this is basically a series 4 watch, so it should be fine with regards to updates for the OS for a while.
it's first gen SE, so it was released in late 2020
Definitely not in the e-waste category.
This is two years newer than the Series 4, which is still supported. So, I suspect that this will still get another few rounds of OS updates.

Also, even the unsupported versions maintain their functionality. I have a Series 3, and I still use it for fitness tracking, messaging, 2FA, etc.

So I tried to install an app and it is set to Ask parent/guardian before it allowed her to install. I approved it as a test and it installed. I recall initially turning on that setting during setup. Some apps seem to require an iPhone and it looks like google maps is one of them.

Ah ok. Thanks. I'll mess around with it some more. Thanks for the clarification

I see the Nike Apple Watch Series 7 is 299 -- probably the better purchase for 100 more?

Please tell me you did this on purpose. If not, geez.

For those confused, this is FIRST GEN SE. NOT FIRST GEN watch. 1st gen watch would be better in the trash it was so slow.

I have this. Other than EKG and Oxygen Saturation, Always ON display, it has everything else. Supports latest Apple Watch OS and iPhone 6 and up. Processor is fast for everything I need (Peloton heart rate for eg) and the response to input is much faster than Apple Watch Series 3. Great price.

How long the battery last for one full charge?

Thank you for that feedback. This is exact same reason I'm looking to get this. I was doing a quick Google and I was reading there is potential battery drain issue when the watch is being used as a standalone Vs being connected via Bluetooth to an iPhone basically 24/7. Just wanted to see if your daughters watch has enough battery on its own to last a school day. Thank you

She got it at the beginning of summer, so she's only had it during camp (which is probably only about an hour shorter than her school day). Even with her playing on it, she usually has enough charge to last until she gets home.

Ok placed my order and now looking for the cheapest cellular plan for it. Its purpose will be to keep in contact with my kid and to track them if we can't find
them. Would something like a red pocket 1-yr $35 plan work?

@wildkarrde, I checked with T-Mobile and they are saying that it will cost $20 to add a separate Smart watch line, but $15 to add a Smartwatch for existing phone number. I'm surprised how you got it down to $5.
What kind of T-Mobile account do you have?

I'm on Magenta Max. I initially added the plan via the watch, which forced me to the $15 plan (5gb) with the $5 autopay discount = $10/month. I found out about the Apple Watch Standalone 500mb plan from another thread but had to call their CS to change to it.

Thanks for sharing. I'll find out more about that plan, because I'm also in Magenta Max

@wildkarrde, just wanted to confirm that your smart watch has it's own phone number and not tied to any of the parents iPhone.

Correct, she has her own phone number and iCloud account associated with the watch.

Gotta agree with some of the folks here on how good this is. I was never an Apple Watch fan or user, but with this being a cellular model and as cheap as it is, this is definitely one of the better deals. I just got mine through this deal, along with one more for my SO and this was a great way to share a new thing together!
