I still buy CDs because I liked having a physical copy of music (a dying concept no doubt, but works for me). So I can rip the CDs, then make high quality mp3s and put them on a flash drive to use with my car's stereo. The sound quality is better than streaming and if I lose or damage the drive, I just make another since they're so cheap now.

I burn disc based video games, Dreamcast, saturn, Sega cd, turbo duo, and then use my Canon mx922 printer to print directly to the blank disc's.

It only cost $20 because it's USB 2.0 and not expensive to make. You start looking for a USB 3 DVD and top ripping speeds, expect to pay a lot more too. Probably have to use an external case with full size 5.25 optical drive to get USB 3, or find a external Blu-ray that comes with it.
PS. Most of them only come with USB 2.0 because they don't see much improvement even with USB 3.0.
EDIT: looks like I was wrong. USB 3 external DVD drives can be had for under $20... if you don't mind no-name brands. (Mougerk? Doosl?? Rioddas???)

Unless you really MUST have a portable version, just find a full size 5.25" external housing with USB 3.0 and add a SATA Blu-ray drive. If you don't have a full size Blu-ray SATA drive already, they pop up in Slickdeals on occasion. I've picked up a few from old desktops that were upgraded with blu-ray drives before being discarded... but that takes some looking.

there are some varieties of blueray versions. some of the old players do not support or read them though. how much should we expect for a sata blueray player (not recorder) nowaday? the cheapest "universal" blueray standalone player is like $89 at walmart.
