If they had a Roku app that I could stream to and it ran in the background while I could use my computer for other things, I'd be all in. Or if it would allow you to still use your computer like Chrome does when streaming from a tab..

Screen mirroring on Roku makes your computer's entire screen go to the tv.. Some of us would like to stream and work/surf.

For that reason, I'm out.

Maybe I'm not following entirely what you're saying. But, the recordings you make can be streamed in the background to Roku while doing other things on the computer with an app such as Plex. And you can also do all that while actively recording, recording is in the background/playon app, you don't see it, it's not recording your "active" screen, just a hidden player.

You can still watch the recording. This doesn't download the shows it records them think of it like a fancy screen recorder. It does one-to-one recording time. 43 minute show 43 minutes to record.

If you use Plex it's a way to add content. There are ways to even strip out the commercials if the streaming service puts them in. And then let Plex re scrape the metadata.
Thanks!

I'll have to look into the Plex angle. When using screen mirroring, it does just that, it takes your entire screen and throws it to the Roku, you can't put it in the background and then surf the web while the show plays in the background. Maybe I made it clearer as to what I was saying?

I'm just not getting the screen mirroring part, this has nothing to do with that, unless you're using it for something that does. So I'll explain more, and you can clarify what you're meaning.

You start Playon, set it to record, then you minimize it. You can use the computer as needed without seeing it record, it's hidden. After you get done, you have a saved file. You can play that file on any number of programs on your computer, media player, VLC, whatever, in a window or fullscreen. Or, you have Plex set up, both computer, and Roku. Computer needs on. Open Plex on the Roku, your Library of saved files on the computer is displayed in Plex on the Roku. It resembles a streaming service, thumbnails, description, etc. Select the show on the tv and control it with the remote. The computer does not display during playback, you can use your computer how you want without seeing the playback. Playon does not need to run during playback. Other than your drive being accessed, the computer shows very little signs that Plex is running.

There are alternatives to Plex, it's just what I've used, haven't looked if anything better came along.

So, they don't have a functioning Roku app, but you can use the Roku media player app to stream from your PlayOn server on your computer.
This gives the functionality of still being able to use your computer for other things while the videos stream from the background vs. using screen mirroring where it just clones your entire computer screen so you can't surf while the videos play without it showing on the TV.
It's not perfect since RMP on't automatically go to next episode and you can't use Ad Skip, but it makes it worthwhile to try out for a year.

Another con so far: Since it's DVRing your shows, it is a 1:1 ratio of downloading. 90 minute movie? Plan on at least a 90 minute download.

There used to be a Playon channel, but they dropped it. I've only glanced at RMP, didn't care for it, but Plex does go to the next episode automatically (and I'm not meaning to sound like I'm "pushing" Plex, just that it's all that I've used much). Ad skipping, hit or miss, Playon channel used to do it automatically. Some edit out the commercials with MCEBuddy or other program (so they are gone from the file completely). I have not researched, or had extra time for, any of that, though I saw it mentioned that it also removes subtitles if they are in the file, so some people didn't like that.

As far as the con, yes, that's how they avoid getting sued and remain in business in the US. They don't break encryption and don't download the file directly. Some Chinese software does do that, more expensive, pretty sure not legal here. So Playon works just like a DVR or VCR, records the playback screen in real time (so, you can set a schedule to record when not using, if you want).

I see this https://github.com/ccarlin/PlayOnSnip
and this https://github.com/mdhiggins/PlexAutoSkip
but have not looked into their use, if they even work, etc.
