Deal History includes data from multiple reputable stores, such as Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. The lowest price among stores for a given day is selected as the "Sale Price".
Sale Price does not include sale prices at Amazon unless a deal was posted by a community member.
I picked one of these up a few years back. It's a fantastic saw with plenty of power. For 150 it's an absolute no brainer if you're in the Makita ecosystem.
can someone please explain how to do the hack so I don't get stuck with the things I don't need
You have to return the 2 extra bonus batteries in the store, to get your $144 back, making the saw and 2 batteries that already come with it just $155.

Here's how it works (in a little more detail).
The link takes you to the Home Depot listing. On upper right (of desktop on my browser) it says free gift with purchase. Clicking on that side link lets you add 2 additional batteries. So now, for $299, you have the circular saw / bag / dual charger / 2 batteries PLUS the "free" additional 2 batteries. When you check out, Home Depot automatically will prorate/proportion the amounts of the 2 items. For me, it puts the saw kit at $155 and the additional batteries at $144.
After you purchase, you can return none / either / both items, but the "deal" is that you return the 2 additional batteries. (note: some people say just pick up 1 item or order at different stores. I've typically just picked up both and then return the batteries) That would leave you getting the circular saw kit for $155 which is pretty nice on it's own.
Going further, and this is what I have done many times, is I'll see the saw alone for $80 to $120. Of course YMMV on that, so I figure around $100. That would then leave you 2 batteries, charger, and bag for about $55 (plus whatever tax you have). Not bad! I would say the charger is good for $20-$50. But ignoring everything else, you could have 2x 5Ah batteries for about $30 each with a little work.
Looking for a couple batteries for the Makita chainsaw I bought, I ran across this kit for $175 four years ago (this was not a promotion that required purchase of another two batteries).
I gotta say, have very very seldom used this saw and fall back on a nice light corded Rigid circular saw - generally used with a speed square. I never got the knack of using the Makita because a speed square doesn't work with it. I hear this is an East Coast/West Coast preference but it seems unnatural (don't know why).
