The review is literally titled return of the King
Probably negligible in 99% of user cases. Keep in mind that Western Digital does NOT provide the individual firmware files for their nvme drives. You can only update through the WD Dashboard application, which is Windows Only. AFAIK, Samsung doesn't openly provide Linux alternatives, but they provide the firmware ISO which you can use with tools in Linux to flash.
If I want to update firmware, I boot into an old 256gb nvme with a windows install on it (using Rufus Windows to Go) , install the WD Dashboard, and upgrade the firmware. Then boot back into my Linux machine.
Shouldn't need to update firmware often, but if something happens like Samsung where you need to update firmware urgently and are on Linux, you'll need to workaround it.
990 Pro has an edge but would choose whichever you can get the cheapest.
Some of these 990s were defective with greatly shortened lifespans. Users were reporting extremely high drive degradation (<90% drive life after 1 month). Unless you want a drive that only lasts a year, I would buy WD or another brand for this generation.

This was addressed with a firmware update. Did you update and still run into issues?
Cashback was from place with a lot of free (typically corporate branded) junk and some of those deer with antlers.
Update: Hooray! Just got confirmation on the cashback. $19.50 back makes me happy.
Lol im really curious how much diff youll notice from 980 with $30 extra
I got a 980 for $99 b4 prime day, gonna keep it. Highly doubt it's anything noticeable unless you are doing some serious file stuff
I'm starting to get parts for a new build and I bought 2 Samsung 990s a couple of days ago on another Amazon "Deal of the Day" or something for $129. Then I see the WD deal pop up today or last night. lol. Not a huge letdown, I guess. I remember back around June when these 990s went on sale for around $179, there were articles saying it was a steal at that price. The way these prices are dropping, I'm sure they'll be giving them away for free by Black Friday.
