Most dash cams will have difficulty clearly capturing license plates under majority of conditions. I'm happy to be proven wrong, and I'll happily buy the ones that can.

My recommendation is if your dash cam records audio, read the license plate out loud if you can.

I own three Vantrue dashcams that have been running solidly for many years. I've had no issues with any of them.

I actually had a cabinet drawer hit the windshield in my work van at 70mph (I can't make this stuff up!) Flew out of a trailer that was even tarped. Got a dashcam in all my vehicles shortly after, and they've now saved my arse, twice. Get a dashcam, folks. It's worth every penny.
Just don't get a vantrue one. Got 2 for mine and wife's cars. Both died shortly after return windows closed. Got replacements thru the vendor. Both died soon. Company stopped responding to emails.

Now we got garmin gps/dashcam thing for both cars. The video is low quality and it doesn't record sound but it's good enough and hasn't died in 3+ years

Thanks, but with the $100 coupon applied at checkout the newer model is way higher spec (4k front camera for example, capacitor not battery, etc...) and a better value.

Seems like a lot better deal. Not sure why it's not added to main post. Much better than the N2 for just $10 more.

Help me choose!

N2 pro on ebay for $110 - Cheaper, Doesn't have to wire to the back, 2.5k front but only 1080p rear. Possibly bulky. Has view of passengers which is a negative.

or E2 dual for $154- 2.5k Both. have to hardwire, look sleeker, and nice, the most expensive out of the 3.

or X4S Duo $130. 4k front, 1080p rear, Have to hardwire, doesn't look that nice.
E2 dual

After using mirror dash cam. I can't drive without it. Having rear camera display in your rear mirror display all the time is a plus. It can monitor blind spot better than your side mirror.
Got a rec?

I wish mine lasted more than a year of being installed.

I have used Viofo A119 V2 (7 years), A129 Duo (5 years), and A129 Plus Duo (~ 3 years) daily without any issues so far.
All Viofo dash cams use Capacitors instead of internal battery so they can run in the hot Summer.
Try to install the dash cam body in the windshield tint area with the lens just below it.

I've tried dash cams before but none can hang onto the windshield in the hot Texas sun. Anyone have experience with these in hot climates?
Same here. From Texas

That's where I keep mine, now I have the a119 so hopefully I have good luck with this one.

Is it necessary these days to have the front and back cams? I still only have a front facing only one so might look into one of these with both
if you have a fast car yes ApplauseApplause

Does it need to use hardware kit to hardwire?
If you want to use the parking mode recording, you need to install the hardwire kit.
Otherwise, you can use the provided USB cable to power any dash cam.

is it challenging to do that? :-)
It's easy to install the hardwire kit.
One thing you need to check is to make sure the the hotwire goes through the fuse in the hardwire kit using the digital multimeter.
You can check on YouTube to see whether it has your car model hardwire kit installing video.
