I think there's a happy medium for that level of EDC that doesn't require cargo shorts. Just a sturdy pair of actual walk shorts with belt loops and adequate side/back pockets.
Here is one you might like, especially if you like a slightly shorter short. I found them on clearance for $5 one time and bought a couple, but the colors aren't for everyone. I ended up getting the blue ones because that's all they had and they are a very slick deal at $5. I've actually gotten compliments from women. And unlike the OP shorts (which I ordered two of because they're cotton), they have a zipper!!
They're very nice and well made (yes, sturdy). And being corduroy makes them thicker and soft. But I wouldn't pay $25 for them. Worth putting on your saved list for when they're back on sale.

i wear dozens of shorts of various styles
and it's much better to wear your phone
on a thigh pocket than around your hips.

they are not heavy cotton duck nor thin junk
and all the front and side pockets are useful.
the rear pockets are shallow, but you should
not be depending on them for anything major
or that will make your butt look ridiculous.
loop resolving on the outside - they look stupid,
like you are walking around in swim trunks.
Respectfully (I'm not fat shaming), these seem best suited for very heavy folks with a low stomach pouch (the kind big people have that extends down to the crotch and basically creates a hump) and short legs.
