You can always get a heatsink for around $10, but it's one more thing to install and can void the warranty.

Leads me to question is the SN850X suitable for laptops. I am leaning towards returning it and hoping better 4TB NVMe solutions become available.
Not wanting to sound like a SK Hynix shill but the Gold P31 is still a compelling choice for laptops even if it is gen3. Same 2TB max capacity. IIRC, the Gold P31 was competitive with early gen4 drives. In actual use, doubt if you would ever notice much of any performance difference on a laptop between a quality gen3 and gen4 drives unless you are really hammering the system (gaming) or doing large file transfers.
Ugh, nevermind, this one is WITHOUT a heatsink, same price with a heatsink.
Actually I don't know what's the difference between the WDS200T2X0E vs WDS200T2XHE.

SK Hynix warranty support is non existent if that matters to anyone.

Samsung MLC is still TLC.
They just get around calling it TLC by using marketing mumbo jumbo.
Amazon is showing August 20th at the earliest if I were to order today.
I wasn't cautioning the average consumer who might be willing to wait for it to get there when it gets there.
If you need to make deadlines, they are for all intents and purposes unable to guarantee a 2 day window. That can be a major setback.

I think you might be overthinking this. I've had the 1TB version in my laptop without a heatsink (no way it would fit) for about a year and I haven't had any issues. I don't game on it and haven't really done anything to push it to its limits, so you might wanna take this with a grain of salt, but I haven't heard about this being an issue. (FYI, my laptop is also a Gen 3.)
They both run over 60C in a desktop computer doing normal everyday stuff like web surfing, Microsoft Word? So a heatsink is an absolute must?
Or they run over 60C because of gaming?
Asking because I have a prebuilt Dell desktop (motherboard does not have built in heatsink) that is Gen 3 (I know WD sn850x is Gen 4).
I also have a Dell laptop that is also Gen 3. Was thinking of moving it from the desktop to the laptop. Maybe runs too hot for the laptop after reading your post and the post above mine.
I bought the SSD without a heatsink. Thinking of returning it for one with a heatsink.
Thanks

Still haven't received mine (without heatsink) from a 7/11 order.
Maybe the ones with are available. I chatted and was told it will ship this week, We'll see.

Sn850x (being X) is slightly better than 980 pro. you can't go wrong with sn850x.
