Podiatrist here. Avoid this garbage. Soft gel insoles are deceptively "comfy" but awful for your feet. You want something firm and supportive, like Superfeet or Powersteps (at least $50+ for a pair)

For $10 a pair, these might provide some minor relief without breaking the bank but I don't recommend them to any of my patients.

No way. It's a huuuuge improvement from the crappy included foam insoles. And you're comparing a $10 product with a $50 one. That's like saying "Toyotas are garbage. Buy a Rolls Royce."

No, you aren't, that poster is just full of crap. They are comparing $35-55 insoles to ones that are under $10. Very occasionally some of the least popular and least effective Superfeet insoles go on sale, like the terribly rated camo ones at Sportsman's for $28. The ones you would want are in fact $50+.

Dr. Scholls may be better than some of the base soles, but not for those special requirements people were thinking $10 sole will provide. Especially not so great for arch support, may be good only for few times use but soon needs to be replaced.

I find it oddly suspicious that Dr. Scholl's insoles are primarily the only brand of insoles constantly listed on slick deals. The last time I commented on their trash products my account was removed with no notice. What's going on here?

There is a bit of a break-in period when switching to new orthotics. Simply putting in a new pair can hurt a lot, going from having no support to having a TON of support. Not everyone has that issue though. Also make sure to take out the insert that came with your shoes when inserting in the new ones, because it can make your shoes too tight. Don't toss them away as you may later decide that the Powersteps might not be for you.

I usually suggest wearing it for one hour one day, then two hours the next day, three hours the next day, and so on. See if that helps.

Regarding the mass market insert comment, I agree. Custom inserts won't do you any good if the over the counter ones don't.

I guess the main thing is, is your bunion painful at the joint? On top? The side? Depending on what you're dealing with, wider shoes with a wide toe box can be helpful, or a bunion shield from Amazon/CVS/Walgreens etc. From then on, depending on how bad the bunion is, if you have bad range of motion in that (1st metatarsal phalangeal) joint, your podiatrist could modify your orthotics with a "reverse Morton's extension". Not too many conservative treatments for bunions before considering Surgery.
Thanks for the detailed response. I actually felt much better the first two weeks I wore the powersteps and they allowed a ton of pain to go away on my right foot (I had a slight fracture there a few weeks ago near the big toe/big toe bone). However once I felt better it was weird, I had to keep adjusting my foot to not supinate (or feel like supinating) even though I got the insoles for my overpronation. I thought I would just deal with them but I started feeling shin splits and plantar fasciitis even though I never dealt with them on the same shoes before.

So overall I used the insoles for about a month, they were perfect the first two weeks and started hurting soon after. Not sure if I should try a lesser comfort insole, I am currently using pedag viva insoles but they are quite thin (barely any support) but don't hurt as much.

Bunion - my bunion isn't painful at all, isn't quite pronounced and I'm pretty young, I just want to stave off surgery as much as possible. I've been using adidas ultraboosts with a half size up to allow a wide toebox, but I think I will get Hokas next as I've heard the spacing in them is much better. What would you suggest?

Sometimes just getting new shoes just fixes the problem.

Regarding Hokas, they're an excellent brand. If you CAN, find a running store near you and try them on. Hokas have excellent motion control with their plantar rocker and personally I dislike that rocking motion. I'm more of a Brooks kinda guy. Doesn't mean Hokas are bad, they're just not my style. You wouldn't be able tell without physically trying them on in a shoe store, as opposed to purchasing them online via Amazon. Hope that helps.

I have Heel bursitis for several months now (on both feet, right heel is much bigger than left heel)., which Superfeet insole should i wear for work, since i'm not actively running or fast walking. I was thinking of getting the dr scholl heavy duty, but since your comment, i would like for options coming from a Podiatrist. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Inserts should be picked based on your activity level and your arch height (flat foot vs "normal" vs high arch). I am assuming your bursitis is causing you pain in the back of your heel. An insert won't address the pain there. Something like NSAIDs (voltaren gel is super popular and effective if you don't have kidney issues), icing can be helpful for that. The manufacturer's website for Superfeet has a little questionnaire to help you determine which color Superfeet will best suit you. I don't know it off the top of my head but Greens are for a certain arch height, oranges are for a different kind, and so on.

I am 65 years old and have arthritis from fractures and broken toes in my left foot. About 2 years ago I tore the Lis Franc ligament, which is difficult to treat because it's deep inside the foot. Podiatrist had me wear a boot for a month, then gave me Power Step inserts to wear all the time. They really make a difference. He stocks them in his office and I just pick up a pair for $30 when they start wearing out.
I've never tried any other brand and I know the Scholls are cheaper but just thought I'd share my review of the Power Step.

Obviously you're the professional, but I had prescription orthotics for years, which got lost during a move. Bought some Dr Scholl's temporarily and have never looked back. They've worked great for me ever since and it's been years. Could be my body or lifestyle changed, but everyone is different. Also, not all Dr. Scholl's are the same. Some have more support.

I'm glad they work fantastic for you. It's all YMMV and I think it's good that you're feeling good using those ones.

Dr. Scholls works for me, so I was a little irritated that some people on this thread were so dismissive. I appreciate your acknowledgement as a Podiatrist that mass-market insoles may benefit some people because of YMMV. I feel like professionals often push what is best even if something cheaper will do. Unfortunately most Americans like myself, have to make compromises due to the state of the economy. Superfeet and Powerstep may only be $40 more but those $40 needs to be spent on gas, food, and rent. That's why posts like these are so important. To help people on the margins get any amount of relief, even if it's temporary.

Not all of them are soft gel. Some have hard plastic as part of in the insole for support.

Why is it that there is such a cost difference between the better insoles and Dr. Scholl's? I know someone said that the better insoles are made of harder foam. What makes harder foam so much more expensive? Why hasn't Dr. Scholl's figured out how to make good insoles after all of these years?
