It's a version 1 USB 3 port. You can tell from the 5gbps to host. There's not enough bandwidth for 4k 60Hz. May as well complain it doesn't do 10Gb Ethernet or that it throttles attached NVME enclosures.

These kinds of cheap USB hubs aren't designed or intended for any performance application. They are better suited for temporary hookups like presentation theaters and classrooms.

Quality, speed, low price. At most, you get to have two. Often, you only get one.

I have had this for a while. I only use the SD card reader and that conks out if I'm transferring a lot of data.

Edit: this one is not exactly the same. No SD card reader here.

what's the difference between a hub and a docking station now? It feels like there's a blur line these days

A powered hub will generally be less problematic and more reliable (and reliability is key).

I have this hooked to my M2 Macbook Pro. I don't have a 4k monitor, so I can't comment on that but overall it's been solid for the month or so I've had it. Worked flawlessly. I just wish I had paid $20 not $35 but alas, Amazon.

6 in 1 usbc hubs meant to be Steam Deck docks seen like a good option if you don't mind the form factor. This post mentions a sub $20 one. They supposedly do 4k 60hz and have Ethernet.

Regardless, that person will go to the next budget dock thread and post the same comment

Is this somehow 2x better than this one? I've been using it in my DJ console and it's been flawless.

Yes that is the point for this price you can find 4K@60hz. The price keeps going down and this should be the new norm over time.

Also all the other ports should work better with more bandwidth as these must be at least 10GB/s.

My Chromebook has USB 4 so up to 40GB/s. I could run three 4k@60hz with the proper hub.

Historically a hub wouldn't only allow one connection at a time. Versus a switch where majority of ports could be used simultaneously..

As it stands now... The docking stations tend to be better quality(performance etc) and higher priced

If this works for others, then that's wonderful. The HDMI is very wonky. I have a MacBook Air, and I know Apple devices tend to not play well with others.. but I was trying to setup a video conference at work and the HDMI would not display on the monitors. It was very aggravating. Also not having an Ethernet Jack is frustrating sometimes.

The USB speed has nothing to do with the video output on this type of hub. Max resolution and refresh rate is determined by the HDMI version of the controller in the hub and the DP version of the controller that is wired to the Type C port from the device's CPU.

Behold, a 5Gbps USB and 1Gbps Ethernet hub with 4K60 HDMI

no go as it is 4k@30Hz . Be aware if you plan to connect it to a monitor or TV, you need one rated at 60Hz.
