Hello, Newbie here. As a homeowner would you recommend Makita @154$ with battery or a Dewalt @75$. I currently have a Dewalt battery that i can use. Both are HD hacks. Using it for basic tasks, any advantages of going with Makita? Any suggestions?

If you are already in the dewalt lineup I would personally try to stick to dewalt. A good compromise might be spending a little more for the brushless 6.5 dewalt (dcs565). I have both this makita and the dcs565, and while the makita is definitely superior in build quality, features, and power, the dewalt is much lighter and cuts well enough for my liking. Outside of drills/drivers, circular saws are my most used tools and well worth spending a little more for better quality imo.

Per your links, you are comparing apples to oranges...6 1/2" single battery Dewalt vs. 7 1/4" dual battery Makita.

I am all in on Makita. I have the 6 1/2" and it does almost everything I need. Every time I see the dual battery 7 1/4" hackable, it takes two hours to talk myself out of it.

TLDR if you don't need a 7 1/4" saw, stick with Dewalt since you have batteries.

I dont see the items price as 174 i see it as 299 for the kit plus 2 free batteries 5 amp

My experience: Firstly, all my cordless tools are Makita 36v X2 + some 18V. NONE have ever broken on me and I have been using them on and off for about 8 years. I am not a contractor, but I am a landlord and DIY guy so I do give them a workout. Now, I have multiple residences and own the Makita standard cordless 7 1/4 up north and have this referenced model in Florida. IMHO, this model is much smoother and accurate than the other design. Which brings me to the story of how I purchased this model at HD. Most HD stores have a clearance section near the lumber aisles. The store decided to move this saw (NIB) to that section for some unknown reason and price it at $100. No batteries included, but I had plenty. Scooped that baby up fast.Check that clearance section. It's hit or miss.

BTW, I never did do the hack thing, though. Should have, but now being retired, I watch my tool budget! Good luck, guys!
