How does the 7950X3D compare to the 7900X? The combo for it is $550.
https://slickdeals.net/f/16825289-microcenter-amd-ryzen-9-7900x-asus-b650e-f-rog-strix-gaming-wifi-g-skill-flare-x5-series-kit-64gb-ddr5-6000-cl30-549-99

PS the $25 off $100 coupon doesn't work on this since it's a bundle. Tried it on Friday.

Upwards of 30-40% better performance depending on the title. Uses ~50% less power. 4 more cores/8 more threads, slightly higher boost clock. 8 core CCD vs 6. Newer as well.
Did you try it on this bundle? I'm wondering if they'd consider honoring it since there's nothing explicit in the coupon or the bundle that says you can't use it. Maybe they'd go for it considering this bundle hasn't had the same attention.

64GB is way too much RAM. Speed will be slower and you will also be paying more on your electricity bill each year because of it.
Why will speeds be slower by having more RAM?

Larger sticks have higher latency.

Ah that makes sense, duh. I just checked the timing, seems pretty good for 64GB.

What ddr5 are you looking at that has significantly better timing than these? The rationale for the 7950x3d is dual purpose use. If you're just gaming... 7800x3d is superior and you'd want the couple hundred bucks towards your GPU. Anyone that needs this many cores will probably want at least 2x32GB ram.

I'm not the one who brought up slow memory. I was just answering someone's question.

The 7950x (non-3D) bundled price was the same for quite a while but included an x670-E board. Either way this is a good deal, but I'd opt to wait to see if they tossed in an x670 board. For me, the TB4 header for an add-in card was important.

30-40% better - maybe at 720p on a couple of titles? If you're gaming at 4K, the difference is around 4% on average. If at 1440p, maybe 10-11%, and closer to 13% at 1080p. 30-40% is ridiculous and is reserved to outlier titles at low res if any. I don't think I say anywhere where the 7950X3D was better than the 7900X by 40%.

Here is a link to techpowerup's review. They have a 20 game average and compare the relative performance of the 7950x3D with a 4090 to other CPUs:

I'm anticipating that their 7950X3D bundle will sweeten eventually, it seems like the 7700/7900X bundles will sell and this one will sit for the most part. Considering the 7900X bundle uses the same motherboard and RAM as this bundle, they'll likely swap one or both out for some stock that they want to move.

For a pure gaming use, is there much more to gain from a slightly better motherboard? The RAM is already overkill and has good CL timings, I can't imagine there's much more to gain there.

No. The x650 is fine. But, if you're planning on sticking with the same board for 4ish+ years, then it's worth some consideration. If Apple pushes TB4 on their new devices you may see the cost and availability of Thunderbolt/usb4 devices come down and become more widely available. If that's not important to you at all the x650 gives ample expandability.

Either way, if you're next to a Microcenter there's rarely been a better time to build a bare bones system. GPU prices and game optimization, on the other hand, is variable.

If you are gaming at 4K, I'm not sure the x3D processors are worth it, TBH. You're talking 4%ish difference with a 4090. I might consider saving the $250 and putting it toward a better GPU. If you're playing at 1440p or 1080p on competitive titles where you need every frame, then perhaps it's worth it. But these are high end, costly platforms. I'd assume they are being paired with high end GPUs for high fidelity gaming not CSGO.

Kind of misleading because the 16GB stick will be much easier to overclock than a 32GB stick
These are bottom of the barrel ram. I don't think you are going to have much success with either a 16 gb or 32 gb stick but AMD is preping a BIOS update that's suppose to help with the RAM issue tho.

For those that plan to use the bottom PCIx16 (x4 mode) slot, you'll lose the ability to use the 3rd M.2 slot. I was on the fence about this particular bundle, but with the 7900X for a long while. That either/or limitation is what keeps me from getting anything with this motherboard. Really wish they'd bundle the E version or some other X670/E board.
