The only requirement for unlocking is to activate the phone then wait for 60 days. There is no need to pay for the 2nd month unless you care about the points for the reward program. (Used to be good, but I think the reward program becomes a lot worse since the Verizon acquistion)
For android phone, you will have to request the unlock code from their online unlock portal. They will ask you for some information to verify eligiblity then ask you to give them your email address. The unlock codes and unlock instructions will be sent to the email you provided. After that, all you need to do is to dial a combination of numbers to access the unlock menu, enter the unlock codes, then reboot to get the phone unlocked.
I use Tracfone which is a "sister" brand of Total. This is the site that I use to request an unlock code when my TF Android phones became eligible for unlocking. Someone on Reddit when answering a question about unlocking a Total phone posted the same link: https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/w...BIS9nQSEh/

I had just bought and sign up with TotalVerizon last week; taking advantage of their cheaper Samsung Galaxy A54 at $279 as I couldn't find cheaper deals, My choice then was StraighTalk with 4 open lines vs. TotalVerizon which only uses Verizon's comm line.
TotalVerizon won in the end. If you scroll down to the bottom left of the website; there's an option to sign up and save 15%, which in my case was $42 saving at the check-out.
So definitely add into consideration. I believe that the same offer should apply to other items there. And to save you time, the code after signup was WELCOME15
No Verizon service in many areas. Four bars, but the bandwidth is not available. Verizon sold many towers to ATT, and it keeps getting worse. Have Verizon now, but might have to add an ATT sim.
I have 2 lines currently for $60/month, would that qualify me for a free phone if I port my google voice number or something over? Or can I add a line to my plan (3 lines total) and get a free phone or does it require an individual $50 plan?
Err, I'm fully aware of that. My question is whether Total by Verizon devices are available for purchases at their stores.
Not in Verizon store, but in Total by Verizon store.
Total is owned by Verizon but they have separate stores. For Total deals, you have to go to a Total store. An analogy is like the Yum brand. Pizza Hut and Taco Bell are both owned by Yum but Pizza Hut deals won't work at a Taco Bell store.
Edit: If you go back a few posts up, there is a guy who said he is a store manager for Total. Not sure if he is willing to answer questions if you PM him though.

Tracfone no longer exists as a separate company in the US. They were all purchased by Verizon so they are all flavors of Verizon now. Trac/Straight Talk/Total etc all owned by VZW now.
I dont get total w/ the portfolio other than they offer multiple phone discounts but still charge postpaid taxes. It is a weird bird and value dubious.
Will it work on tracfone from day 1? I am with tracfone and need a backup phone urgently.
Yes, you can buy a phone from other TF brands like Total, StraightTalk, Net10, etc and use with Tracfone. If you it unlocked after 60 days of service, ask a rep to "rebrand" it as a TF phone (it still can use the same SIM that came with the phone). Otherwise TF might treat it as a BYOP phone and won't unlock it.
