Its like deals that get downvoted for posting a rebate deal, but only the after rebate price.
You still have to fork over the full price for the items, then get money back. Some people like to know that ahead of time before checking.
Its also rare, and up to the HD manager in question, but some users have reported stores cracking down on the "hack" process. I overheard at my HD the service rep insist if you return part of the "buy something get something free deal" you have to return both pieces for a full refund, or nothing.
