Updated 8/30/2023:
They now have the
128GB version [totalbyverizon.com] for $99.99. You can just buy the phone from Total by Verizon and activate it on Tracfone's cheapest plan for $15/month ($10 with auto refill) to start the 60 days unlock clock. (FYI, the sim card comes with the phone can be used to activate the Tracfone service)

Total by Verizon just reduced their iPhone SE 2nd generation from $149.99 to
$99.99 [totalbyverizon.com].
Similar to other Tracfone deals.
The phone will be unlocked automatically after 60 days since activation. You only need to pay one month of service, not 2 months. I just got my iPhone SE 3nd generation unlocked from the
previous front page deal.
Phone $99.99 + $30 1 month of service = $129.99 plus taxes.
This may not be as fast as the iPhone SE 3nd gen for $149.99 but should be better if you don't want to spend extra for back up.

The only problem I have with this phone is it's just such an old design that's so boring and outdated. If the iPhone 11 on total by Verizon dropped to $149 that would be worth it. Yes it would be 2 generation older chip but it would have the same 4gb ram and a way more modern design with face ID and way better battery life.
FWIW, you can let the phone stay connected to 4G/LTE and not go on 5G to conserve battery if drain is a concern.
Been trying to convince my cheap boomer father in law to upgrade his iPhone 7 but he's of the mindset that if it's not broken why get a new one.

Any suggestions to fix it? Also will it unlock?

Got my phone yesterday. It came with a Total by Verizon sim card.
I purchased the Tracfone $10 with auto refill (without autorefill it is $15) on Tracfone website using the phone's IMEI. FYI, it asked for the first IMEI associated with the physical SIM card slot, not the second IMEI which is associated with the eSim. My line was showing active on my Tracfone account but my phone shows no service without a physical sim.
I called Tracfone support this morning. The rep got asked me to use the Total by Verizon Sim. He got the Sim card number and asked me to restart the phone. Then my phone can make calls.

For backup phone or light phone users, they use wifi mostly and charge the phone at night.
5G and the battery playback hours are not deal breaker but $50 can be with 1/3 of the savings.
Both versions have the same design, iPhone SE users put the small form factor on top of other things.
