Solid entry level XC bike and a good value.
Pros: hydraulic brakes, internal cable routing, wide range 1x Deore drivetrain with 10-46t cassette, tapered headtube for future fork upgrade, etc.
Cons: heavy coil fork, 10-141 QR rear hub, XC geo (some will complain about the steep headtube angle)

You're definitely right that qr has been phased out (for marginal gains for most), just lamenting the days of simple universal standards.
There is no doubt that the through bolt design is stronger, but I doubt that most riders have ever had a problem with qr.

I put on new disc pads and replaced my mineral brake fluid so there is so little leeway between rotor and disc pads and I have to put on the wheel in a meticulously way or pad may rub when riding.

It's a fancy trick, but fails often when tossing wheels in the car. I used to do much the same before TA. Jumped on the TA bandwagon to never need to deal with it again and enjoy the extra rigidity up front. I personally wouldn't go back to a QR. Now if we could just decide on 1 standard for production bikes that would be great. (Same goes for many of the other parts)
And of course there's REI's shockingly generous return policy and in-store support as well. Definitely the way to go for a newer rider who might not be confident doing their own assembly and maintenance.
Initial impressions:
1. I love the large 29 inch tires. They make the ride smooth and easily roll over everything.
2. Front fork is much better than I thought it would be. Yes it's entry level, but works quite well for a beginner.
3. Brakes don't appear to be strong enough. I have squeezed all the way yet, I want to brake them in first, but they feel a little underpowered.
4. Shifting works great. Responsive. Not as fast or high quality feeling as my Shimano XTR but still great. Much better than the series below this.
5. Geometry feels better than my Cannondale Rush 400.
Overall, this bike is excellent and a steal for $600.

The Salsa website is still showing $599.
Was going to pull the trigger on the REI deal today, guess I shouldn't have waited!
