I think in the medium term this is problem for all standards now. In several years I bet the 12mm thru axle will be undesirable because now everyone is using 15mm for (insert marketing reasons here) and there will be limited options for replacement.

You're definitely right that qr has been phased out (for marginal gains for most), just lamenting the days of simple universal standards.
I've ridden mountain/ road bikes for years and have never had a problem with a qr going bad, being and weak point or causing any problem.

There is no doubt that the through bolt design is stronger, but I doubt that most riders have ever had a problem with qr.
Salsa, and not even close really. Its better all the way down the spec sheet.

The bigger benefit with a thru-axle or a thru-bolt is that you won't have your disk brake pads rubbing because they aren't lined up exactly the same way every time you take the wheel off. On the front it greatly limits the amount of flection as well.

A trick that I do with quick release is that I flip the lever and count how many full rotations it takes to slip off. When I put the wheel back, I know it will take so many rotations and it will be lined up and the lever tension will be consistent. For example I may flip the lever and do 5 full rotations and remove. To install, I put on the wheel and do 5 rotations of the nut and then close the lever in the same spot.

I put on new disc pads and replaced my mineral brake fluid so there is so little leeway between rotor and disc pads and I have to put on the wheel in a meticulously way or pad may rub when riding.

It's a fancy trick, but fails often when tossing wheels in the car. I used to do much the same before TA. Jumped on the TA bandwagon to never need to deal with it again and enjoy the extra rigidity up front. I personally wouldn't go back to a QR. Now if we could just decide on 1 standard for production bikes that would be great. (Same goes for many of the other parts)

Canyon
Having owned both I'd disagree. The Canyon has the better drivetrain and marginally better stock fork (both are coil-sprung) but you get a much better overall package with the Salsa. 120mm front travel, boost spacing front and rear, front thru axle, 30mm rims, tapered headtube, support for internal dropper routing...

And of course there's REI's shockingly generous return policy and in-store support as well. Definitely the way to go for a newer rider who might not be confident doing their own assembly and maintenance.

Picked up the bike today and took her out for a ride.
Initial impressions:
1. I love the large 29 inch tires. They make the ride smooth and easily roll over everything.
2. Front fork is much better than I thought it would be. Yes it's entry level, but works quite well for a beginner.
3. Brakes don't appear to be strong enough. I have squeezed all the way yet, I want to brake them in first, but they feel a little underpowered.
4. Shifting works great. Responsive. Not as fast or high quality feeling as my Shimano XTR but still great. Much better than the series below this.
5. Geometry feels better than my Cannondale Rush 400.

Overall, this bike is excellent and a steal for $600.

You need to bed the brake pads in when new, then they should be good to go. Failure to do so properly can result in lackluster braking performance.

I would take this over the OT bike. This comes with a group set that is both wider range and higher quality. It also has hydraulic brakes out of the box. It's a bias of mine but if the OT brakes are anything like the Axum's stock disk brake I view replacement as mandatory. Still, if you have just $400 then this bike isn't an option. If you have $600 (does this one charge tax?) then this looks like a really solid deal.

I'm 5'8". Would there be any reason to get the medium (5'8" - 6') instead of the small (5'3" - 5'9")?

For me this a pretty solid deal vs anything Walmart has. I'd just add a dropper post and be fine for a while

At this price I may just skip REI's Salsa Rangefinder Deore 10-Speed 29 Mountain Bike. Will use this bike for friends visiting who's looking to hit the trail

Looks like the deal is dead at REI. Price up to $749.

The Salsa website is still showing $599.

Was going to pull the trigger on the REI deal today, guess I shouldn't have waited!
