Riding with headphones is a terrible idea. Good grief. We are a nation of fools.
Worth every dollar. I have one and I love it
I love to! When there are bike roads/lanes available.

I don't bike, but i have an electric scooter. I'm always trying to think of better ways to be safer. Would I be able to mount this to my helmet? or to a backpack? Or is there too much moving around and it'll throw off the sensors?
You should be able to find a standard Garmin mount that attaches to the back of your helmet. I found a specialized one that I hook to the back of my rear rack on AliExpress ~ $6. Backpack is iffy but I think the movement on the helmet shouldn't be any worse than the movement on a rack. If you have a rack, all the better.

I use the varia app on my phone. No complaints at all, works perfect...
So how do you use it with the app? if it doesn't turn on automatically, do you manually turn it when needed? Thanks.

If i'm on a road with no bike lane or paved shoulder, App + Radar on all the times... I usually don't use it in bike lanes and paved shoulders... large screen and loud speakers on phone, I prefer it over bike comp...

I've always had large screen phones (Note, S Ultra's etc..).

Also use quad lock mount + case 👍🏻. People will say it's not aero but I'm not racing in TDF lol...

I use the Varia with a phone/Varia app, and earbuds. I rely mostly on the audio alerts. I ride with earbuds (sometimes one in high traffic areas) and the buds make it much easier to hear the audio alerts, and I can listen to music at the same time. With or without earbuds, the Varia detects cars better than I can 100% of the time.

There's not a ton traffic where I ride, so if a road is crappy on the shoulder and smoother in the lane, I ride in the lane until a car approaches then slide over. The Varia is why I feel comfortable doing this, otherwise I would not as I don't always hear cars approaching until they are too close for me to feel safe.

Keep you safe from a car hitting you from behind as someone mentioned? Not sure how anything could truly do that. I guess if you constantly look in your mirror for an approaching car that is riding directly in the shoulder and have a plan to throw yourself off the road, that may work. Reality for me is that this detects cars WAY more in advance than I can via hearing / even see it, especially on windy roads, and allows me to ride in the position I feel safest as the car approaches. It's worth the money. Tail light is very bright also.

I think the person that quoted you was really asking about how to keep his screen on.

I've never used the app, so not sure what the behavior is and whether it keeps the screen on.

My screen stays on until I turn it off manually

I wonder if the person that quoted you manually turns it off and expects it to come on when there is an alert.

Yea just to confirm, with the screen off the radar goes into sleep mode, If i turn the screen on with app open, it wakes up and will stay on until i manually turn off the screen..

I ride/commute with earbuds daily. I find relying on visual cues in my mirrors far safer than maybe hearing that EV that slipped up my ass end or drifted out of their lane. Most vehicles have always on headlamps - again visual cues. I also ride year-round (Chicago) meaning I have my ears covered 4-5 months out of the year.

I have bike mirror on my hybrid and the mirror is awesome. Good size, looks pretty nice and I can see pretty well behind me. It is so useful and I use it so many times during a ride. With the road bike, I have a mirror but it is on the drop bar and it is quite small so it definitely doesn't work as well as the larger mirror on my hybrid with the flat handle bar.

This Garmin Varia is a good device but where I ride the streets are too busy and I have way too many cars in the traffic. A guy on youtube stated that the Varia works best when cars come by occasionally rather than a busy area. I ride along a shoulder on a busy highway. The constant beeping would be so annoying and quite unnecessary. To me that is the most dangerous area where I would worry about a texting driver swerving over to the shoulder lane.

I do like to jump right in the middle of a pretty fast avenue when I have a "nice clear wave" to ride. A bunch of cars get stopped at a red light so I know I am pretty clear for a while. The Varia would work great there. I use my mirror when I do that.

If I rode in the right area, I would get this device.

I was able to buy one from Trek today! A window popped up and I was able to use a 10% off coupon, so it came out to $135 + S/H. Thanks!
