Vehicle Power Plug With Voltage Cutoff

3,816 384 August 27, 2023 at 12:34 PM
About 2 years back or so, I was participating in a discussion about dashcam power options. I had posted about the need for a hardwired power support using fuse taps when using parking mode so you do not kill the battery.

Someone disagreed and said they were aware (or maybe used?) a vehicle power plug that acted the same as a hardwired power supply. They posted a link to a plug in device which could be configured for specific voltage cutoff values (e.g. 12.4v, 12.2v, 12.0v, etc.). Iirc, this was a single plug in device with a digital readout for configuring the cutoff voltage values.

I was impressed, but did not need one then. For some reason, if I made a note of the product, I cannot find it. And despite searching through Slickdeals.net forums for this device, I am unable to locate the device or the post with the product link.

Ask:
+ Does anyone use or have seen a device which plugs into the typical cigarette light (power port) on a vehicle and can be configured to disconnect power when the vehicle battery voltage drops to (or below) a configured voltage?

Are you thinking of something like the Rhundo 21s?

Something like this one, but not this one. I read the instructions, and this one includes a timer if the battery drops below 13 volts.

The one I saw allowed setting a voltage level for power cutoff.

The voltage cutoff is adjustable from 11V to 14V in 0.1V increments. Yes the timer is for how long after it hits that cutoff value to disable, but you can set it to 1 minute and bump the voltage up to just a tiny bit higher than you want the cutoff and it'll work the same as just the voltage cutoff. The video below is from the previous model but the functions & settings are all the same; difference is the USB ports. The catch on any of these types of devices is that the socket has to have power. And unless you wired it that way, I think they're all wired from the manufacturer to only be on when ACC or the car itself is on. So if you're looking at it for the purposes of a dash cam in parking mode or such, you might have to rewire or add a socket that's on an always-on line. For a cigarette adapter input, almost everybody seems using one of the Rhundos. For non-cigarette adapter, there are some direct hardwire kits that let you select the voltage cutoff from a predetermined set of a couple via physical selector switch. For those devices, the Viofo hardwire kit seems to have the most options though their output power tends to be lower than some at 2A, with settings for 11.8V 12V 12.2V 12.4V
