The forthcoming TV OS 17 supports VPN [9to5mac.com] and Apple will start allowing VPN apps on its release. I don't know what VPN services will support it, but VPN will be less of a differentiator going forward.

Probably because the 128GB model with ethernet was just on sale for the same price via Costco or a price match to them.

So i've had multiple rokus over the years, 4k firesticks, and pretty much every version of apple tv. 100% apple tv is the best out of them all. The firesticks are too laggy same for the older rokus. The newer ones can be snappyish but nothing beats the apple tv for responsavieness. That said its also like double the price if not more of all of those (when not on sale) so it makes sense its better lol.

I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.

Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

About 4 years ago I switched all TVs to AppleTV. The whole family only uses Apple devices. All iPhones and iPads work as a remote. All apps and user profiles on AppleTVs are synced. Everyone loves the setup and we are not looking back for one single moment.

YouTube app (as a previous user said) didn't glitch once in all the years. In some cases an app or two glitch but a quick restart (I.e., a simple swipe up) fixes it. It's very rare. We could have not been any happier.

Also, I strongly recommend AirPods Pro. You put them in, in 3 sec, there is an automatic pop up on the AppleTV screen, press one button and you're connected. Want to connect multiple AirPods to watch together? It's also not a problem.

I wonder if Apple will release an updated AppleTV during the keynote on September 12.

I replaced a 3 yr old Roku Ultra box with one of the 128g Apple devices. Wanted Ethernet, that's why I went with that model. Nothing wrong with the Roku, just wanted to try a different box. The apple is not as good as the Roku. I'm keeping it because I paid $120 for it from Costco, but the apps are glitchy (specifically YouTube plays horrible while it tries to play ads and the Pluto app has to be deleted and reinstalled weekly for example). Constantly restarts and the remote feels horrible in the hand. The lines are too sharp and the remote too small. I had to buy a cover for it to give some size to be even remotely comfortable. When it dies, I will go back to a Roku player.

I've been a Roku fan for many years and the last three I have had no issues with a 2019 Roku Ultra. However, when I moved from using Windows Media Center as my OTA DVR to Channels, I had to go to the Apple TV 4K Max because Channels doesn't support a Roku client.

To me, both the Roku Ultra and Apple TV are great streaming devices. I have no preference one over the other.

This can also be done on the router. Had Asus setup that way back when I played with VPN.
You bet, though in my experience--in a multi-user household with a plethora of IoT devices--this has caused more headaches and instability than it's worth. My current workflow isn't that bad--I connect the VPN client on the Windows PC or Mac mini, login to MLB in Chrome and start the local game, cast the tab to my TV and full-screen it. I have the VPN service anyway, and the additional $5 for an MLB.TV code from a SDer makes the slight hassle worth it vs paying for cable just to watch our team.

That being said, it would be nice to simply be able to start VPN on the Apple TV and use the MLB app from there.

Who cares about Stability when you don't have much Functionality. That's like buying a shiny iphone for $1k and being locked down and being able to do nothing, when I can buy a Samsung S23 Ultra and be able to do everything. Why pay when I can't do anything with it.

Also, I don't experience lag with my firestick 4k max. You're talking about the lowest model firestick.
Have fun with your two years of Samsung support and having to purchase another one to get the latest updates.

I cannot believe how naïve Android fan boys are. Apple will at least support its devices for 5 years after final sale. Good luck with an Android device for support beyond 2-3 years from when they start the sale of the device.

I do not care what you use, your insights are highly naive and lack any decent context.

I agree with this 100% except if you intend to use YouTube TV. It runs like junk on Apple TV's. It's not an Apple problem (it's on YouTubes and end) but if that's want you plan to use most keep that in mind. This is the only thing keeping me from ditching my Fire devices. If YouTube ever fixes the stutter I will use these exclusively.

I love how the first thing that comes out of you is "Android fanboy" when quite the opposite is that you are an Apple fan boy. Of course that would be your first thought.

I'll continue to enjoy my 512gb Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with a 200 mega pixel camera, which only cost me $1200, the price of an iPhone. Talk about naive, I'll enjoy my ultra customizable phone and my freedom to install whatever I want on the phone that I paid $1200 for, which belongs to me. Meanwhile, you enjoy your locked down simplistic phone which Apple controls everything and doesnt truly belong to you.

I thought we were over this in early 2010's. Any chance you are out of college recently? The tone seems so. Anyways, I am an Engineer and develop apps and I try to be platform agnostic as much as possible, each platform has its pros and cons. Apple excels in user interface and design, Google plays their products as POC's, They offer a lot of things and pull them out soon. I really cannot setup a daily workflow with them.
Its getting harder to be agnostic now a days.

Just a reminder for folks with older HDR TVs (2015/2016) lacking Dolby Vision—the Apple TV can do it's own HDR tone mapping from Dolby Vision content, making HDR content watchable vs. "too dark" with native apps.
