If you buy one of the Samsung drives, make sure to check the version of the firmware and update if necessary. There was news a while back about the 2TB 980 Pro prematurely failing due to bad firmware. The problem isn't exclusive to this model, but it seems to be the most commonly failing model. Sorry, I couldn't find specific info as to whether this update is destructive, but as the other poster said, it could be a good idea to make a backup first. JayzTwoCents did a good walkthrough of how to diagnose and update the firmware https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoAFzdz0h5M (You can skip to 5:00 without missing anything.) He doesn't mention doing a backup, but his demonstration was on a new drive. I would think the software would suggest performing a backup if it was necessary, but it doesn't seem to, so it's might be fine.

If you're not using them as cache drives, go for longevity and whatever other metric fits your system best.

The R/W speeds on these far exceed anything you'll probably throw at it (outside of benchmarks), so no point in going for the fastest drive available if there's other stats that get beaten out by other drives.

That's debatable.

Even if they're using all of the VMs at once, it's unlikely all of them are accessing data at the same time at burst rates.

They mention Plex, which is mostly CPU and network intensive. Even if they were playing uncompressed 4K video, it wouldn't saturate the reads on a fast mechanical drive, let alone a solid state.

The size of the system it's going into is also something to be considered, as the 980 will throttle down in confined spaces with little airflow.

Could be better or worse. I don't know. I already mentioned I loaded up already so waiting on it to see if there is anything better like most folks who don't need storage right away. There were plenty of deals for everyone that were really good these last few months. MSI probably came out the best with rebates besides the WD 4TB one. Getting first gen 4 2TB for $60, and 2TB Spatium 480 with PS5 heatsink for $90 from GameStop, hard to beat. Averaging usually $30-$45 per TB for Gen 4 from various companies.

If you didn't know and already have a higher end motherboard, a lot of them already come with heatsinks for M.2 SSD's. 3 of my systems' mobo's came with heatsink covers and a transfer pad.
