If you buy one of the Samsung drives, make sure to check the version of the firmware and update if necessary. There was news a while back about the 2TB 980 Pro prematurely failing due to bad firmware. The problem isn't exclusive to this model, but it seems to be the most commonly failing model. The firmware update seems to have fixed the issue. https://www.pugetsystems.com/blog...liability/

And it's $50 here. Struggling to understand what your point is.

Why do people keep saying to wait for BF? Every year, I see people on here complain about how BF deals are the worst they've ever been. What makes you think the SSD deals will be so good?

I love NvME. No data cables, no power cables.

I have four NvME on my rig since 3 years ago. It was expensive back then.

Hm.... I have this in my PS5, can I remove it to update the firmware via an external enclosure without losing the PS5 data?
You won't lose the data during the firmware update as some other have mentioned. Unless of course the update goes sour, but that's not very likely. Regarding using an enclosure, you would need a thunder bolt enclosure to do that. A standard USB won't work since it doesn't get to the low level firmware that way.

These are pretty decent prices for Samsung SSDs for anybody in the market. I bought my 1TB 980 Pro for $50 during Prime Day.

Im using this for steam games as a secondary drive

Why would you want a large boot drive? I thought the boot is for the OS and you use a large storage for storage
I like having just one larger NVMe drive with 2+ partitions
C:\ for the OS and apps.
D:\ for program files and user data.

Can the heatsink on the 2TB be easily removed and used without? Asking because the motherboard I'm looking at has a heat shield over the two nVMe slots.

I'm looking a 2TB SSD for my PS5. This is a good deal or I should wait for a better price in black Friday on the 990 Pro?

Alternatively, you can have a secondary drive for all of your applications, downloads, etc and keep the boot drive as clean as possible.

Windows allows you to redirect everything, including where it downloads its own updates.

Why you would want to do this is simple: Small, quick, painless backups of your OS that are easy to restore and unburdened by clutter.

It used to be that it was recommended that you install Windows, update your drivers, and then install all of your must have applications before doing a backup.

But ever since fast internet has been available and everything is cloud based anyway, it makes little sense to try to restore a backup of an application that is going to try to update as soon as you launch it.

There's still exceptions, of course. If you have data caps and you play large games, not backing them up can easily eat up a quarter of your data cap for the month.
I mean I do install a lot of applications that have any size or special reason to not be on the boot drive like most games & my Android debugging and WSA Android on windows cause I have a good reason

No reason to mess with other minor apps that install in Program Files etc, they don't take up much space & are not important

Noticed that SSD/NVME price creeping up a little bit, albeit slowly? Not too long ago that 2TB EVO 970 Pro was on sale for $80! I guess just like anything else nothing last forever. So for those waiting for BF, I hope your waiting is not in vain. Goodluck.

I'm quite sure those mobo heat shields are removable. So if the SSD comes with a heatsink, you might want not install those mobo heatsink. Or you can try removing the SSD heatsink which are usually taped with some thermal pads. Careful though, those thermal pads easily get torn.

Most firmware updates are destructive.

You'd have to transfer the data off if you really want to ensure it's kept.
This is false. Very few firmware updates on consumer ssds are destructive. I have roughly 15 ssds from all different brands right now and have done at least 2 firmware updates on each of the drives. The ONLY update that was destructive was on a kingston ssd from 2014. I also have had the 980 pro that is referenced in this thread since it came out and none of the updates have been destructive. Please give some evidence that most are destructive on consumer drives.

Black Fri may have a better deal but 108 for 2 TB 980 Pro Samsung with a heat sink is pretty good! I just bought it 15 minutes ago. That particular SSD is recommended for ps5 by many tech sites. If your not in any rush wait for BF and get a 4 TB but if your in the market now I'd get it, I did.

Easy question to answer. You want all your PC games on the boot drive for the best performance. All other files/media on the storage drive.
