An important trilogy in the history of epic fantasy. Also the first books in a series spanning many more sequels and prequals.

Sometimes it's knocked for being too derivative of Tolkien. The influence is obvious, but it stands on its own. I do think it's an easier read than LOTR, especially for younger readers.

The individual books typically run much more than this, and the trilogy has never been cheaper. I paid the same price in 2018, but it has not dropped this low since at least 2020.

Just finished the second but for $2.99 why not get all three instead of the last.

I enjoyed the live action TV series. Well the first season at least.
Still sad it ended so fast.

So might as well try the books.

Yeah it's nice to hear some enjoyed the efforts of that show, but I had to stop watching as it was ruining my memory of the books which I very much enjoyed years ago. It's too bad one of the bigger networks with some money behind them can't pick up and do a real run on this series because I think it would do well.
Didn't help WoT

Yeah I skipped it as I know any modern adaptation of anything will be teen-ified.
Big time so! My son and I were screaming at the screen, it was that bad. Gave up midway through the second episode.

Awesome I have this trilogy in audiobooks only. Looking forward to getting them in ebook and maybe time for a reread. The books were much better than the show, but the show was enjoyable as well.
How'd you like the audiobooks? I am listening to The Wise Man's Fear on audible, and the narrator adds so much more to this already awesome book.

Wishsong was the first fantasy book I ever read. I own every book in this series. I saved $20 from my birthday every year waiting for the hardcover to be released. I wish I could get the first 3 in hardback, I could never find them.
I also think Sword is boring and could barely make it through. I'm glad that wasn't the first book I read!

As someone who has read waaaaaay too much fantasy, I have to say that the second book in this series, Elfstones, is my favorite fantasy book ever. The MTV TV show was a travesty, and I really wish someone would give these books the Peter Jackson treatment and turn them into good film versions. If you haven't read these before, this is a great deal and definitely recommended. Just consider skipping the first ~70 pages or so of Sword of Shannara (so very slow), or just starting with book #2.
Agreed. I've probably read the Elfstones book 5 times. Was by far my favorite book he ever wrote.

They should do Magic Kingdom for Sale (also by Terry Brooks). The protagonist is a lawyer and widower, so they pretty much have to be an adult.
I read everything Brooks wrote back in the day. However at this point I remember nothing lol. I definitely remember reading these stories, I believe he went through a portal to this land if I remember right.

I wonder why a major studio hasn't tried to make a movie series out of these books, considering that these are almost classics now (like the Lord of The Rings) and would probably be an easy cash grab.

Good point. I remember it being on par with the Hercules/Xena TV series lol.
Back in the day I was assured by my friends that this was fantasy light. So I wonder if even today the elitists' still look down on them.

It has been openly said by Brooks himself that the Sword of Shannara is a rip off of Tolkien's, but the others are not. The books all feel repetitive as they deal with characters of the same bloodline throughout the series with the exception being the prequel series (angel fire east & it's books + the Genesis series) that follows a different character. I do own all the books and still read them so a good read.
I never knew Brooks admitted/confirmed it. I recall reading these 15 years ago and had a lot of fun linking each event/character in that book to its equivalent in LoTR.

So weird, I read these when I was a kid and was hooked.... I guess I must not have thought it was boring. But then again I routinely only picked books that were 800 pages long at that age.

Someone give me a recommendation or 2 on other series or books/authors I should read? I just got back into reading at age 48 and just in the last few weeks I've read, Ursula K. Leguin's Wizard of Earthsea series, Joe Abercrombie's book 1 of the First Law series, The first 2 books of the Saga of Recluse series by L.E. Modesitt Jr., and I'm currently on book 2 of the Cradle series by Will Wight.

Earthsea was amazing, so I read them all. The First Law series was very good, but lacked a lot of magic and was more sword and board type characters. So I did not continue reading after the first book as I prefer a more magic type world, although I will at some point go back and read more, maybe in a year or so. The Saga of Recluse was awesome and different, but by book 3, it got a little repetitive. So I paused that series for a while and explored others. The Cradle series is a real page turner and again, different from most traditional Fantasy series. I can't stop reading this one, I'm halfway through book 2 and it's the sort of story that has you thinking about it, even when your not reading.

if someone has a recommendation, I'm all ears. I read Brooks when I was younger as well as Goodkind too. When I was in Highschool I read everything I could by Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but moved on to Fantasy and Sci Fi after I graduated.

Is this good book for 8 year old?
That would really depend on how mature or what reading level your 8 year old is on? It's not a hard to understand series, so he/she might be able to follow it ok, but there are a ton of teen type fantasy books on the market that may appeal more to a person under 10. Some examples are the Harry Potter books, which I read as an adult as they came out and even though they were written on a more teen/simple level, I was hooked and couldn't put them down. Of course, I'm sure your 8 year old has seen the movies by now, but the books had so much more content than they could fit into a movie.

Look up YA Fantasy books and authors and you will find some of the top selling young adult recommendations. Books like Song of Silver, Seasparrow, Ash Princess, House of Salt and Sorrows, etc.
