Lol I paid $55 for it a month ago thinking it was a great deal. Looks like the deals keep getting greater. Meanwhile Apple charging hundreds for the same amount…

Apple will have everything soldered to the board making every Apple© product almost impossible to upgrade.

Almost there call me when it's $30 till then I'll stay with my $25 MSI M450 1 TB. hold the lime people.
Usually, great deals in October but all bets off for this year.

Intel 670P, Muskin, Crucial, MSI and some other name brands have had sporadic lows. Back in early Summer the WD 850X 2TB was $89 at WD.com.

Wonder what's causing the prices to fall so much. Is it excess supply or poor demand? Makes me also wonder about how much it actually costs to make these things and the original markup on them for prices to fall this quickly.

I bet 70% of Apple's revenue can be attributed to product differentiation based on storage.
they follow nand flash prices, which are low af currently and they're an oversupply..possibly from covid since noones buying "indoor items" as much anymore

I got this about 3 weeks ago for $50 plus tax. I hadn't looked at ssd for two years but my PNY drive's health dropped to 66%. I had an excuse to shop for a replacement. This Samsung drive is fast but it runs hot even with heat sink. It is for desktop.
PNY gave me 30-40C in temperature. This Samsung 970 gives me 40-55C.

Regarding the degradation / NAND / firmware issue with this and other Samsung drives...

(whatever it is/was, I never got solid info on what was going on)

... should I still be worried about it?

The updated title description should say $49.99-$7 instead of $59.99-$7...

Also, I got this for $49.99 several weeks ago plus $10 back using Discover Card and it works great!

As much as I like this deal, I can't help but think that prices are going to continue to drop the closer we get to Black Friday...then again it's only $40 (so if you need it now, grab one)…and yes, maybe you only save another $5 or so (or perhaps get 2TB for $50) but isn't that the principle of Slickdeals?

Smilie

(So I think I'll wait, but this is still a solid deal and a "thumbs up")

No, that wasn't applicable to this model.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't be proactive and take advantage of the drive being empty to update the firmware, however.

There's no better time for updates than when you first get it.

Seen 980pro 1TB for $49.99 a couple times recently. This price for older/slower seems less slick. Am I missing anything about these drives?
In most scenarios, the performance of this drive will be indistinguishable from the 980 or anything faster.

Most applications simply don't utilize raw throughput without specific use cases, so the on paper numbers are mostly for marketing.

Speeds aside, there's other reasons why you'd want the 970 over the 980.

They run slightly cooler. So if you're putting it in a small form factor device, it won't dump as much heat into the chassis.

Also, many motherboards with multiple M2 slots have NVME Gen 4 as the primary, but the secondary slot might run slower. No point in putting a faster drive in a slower interface.

Should i bite on this now for a boot drive?
If you have spinning rust as a boot drive now, i.e. HDD, then I would do it in a heart beat. I mean what is the point of waiting to get a massive performance upgrade? Want to wait for another 5 bucks or so? Let it go, it's already super cheap it cant get that much cheaper.

Now if you already have a SSD for your boot drive then it s a little more complicated. What would you get out of it? Do you have a cheap aliexpress ssd that is nothing more than a usb flash drive hot glued into a 2.5" enclosure? So yeah a couple more questions if that's the case

Did you use it for a laptop or desktop? I put it in may laptop and even after adding a heatsink it still seems to run hot.

Glad I saw this I was just getting ready to waste everyone's time posting the exact same deal Stick Out Tongue (fortunately the pop up window for the title showed the same item )

One heads up I wanted to give people.. the $7 coupon is a promotional credit that is automatically added to your current amazon promotional credit.. so let's say you already had $20 in amazon promo credit prior to placing the order.. the amazon website will FORCE you to use the $20 in promo credit you already had for $27 off the order total regardless of if you want to use your entire promo credit on the order or not.

For some people no big deal, people like me who remember the old days when amazon made the coupon separate from your promo credit and you had a choice, it's rather annoying.

In theory you can call customer service or chat with them online like I did.. in reality chatting with them online is absolutely useless, you get a terrified chat rep (I thought I was being nice I think all amazon employees are just terrified of meeting their unrealistic quotas) who doesn't really want to transfer you to her supervisor and will vainly try every method possible and waste 30 minutes of time before she tries to transfer you to a supervisor.. the chat window will then time out as the supervisor waits for you to type something, and even if you type something it will automatically transfer you to another supervisor who will also time out.. or at least that was my experience today I'm sure it's not that way ALL the time but be aware this can happen.

I had a similar problem with a logitech webcam amazon offered a coupon on and that also took a long time to resolve albeit via phone which is what I would do.. be prepared to waste time as the phone rep frantically tries to resolve the problem on their own, realizes they can't then transfers you to a supervisor who will issue the promo credit you're losing out on back onto your amazon account after watching you place the order (note that it's a promo credit good only towards items sold and shipped by amazon ) .. so if you go that route make sure you have lots of emails to check or other things to keep you busy so it's not a complete waste of time for you Smilie ..
Sorry I'm confused, why would you go through so much trouble to not use the credit? Why not just use it?
