It looks as if the Elac UB5 three way by Andrew Jones is also on sale for $254. Which is a three way speaker vs these which are a two way. Not sure if that's a SD price but thought it might be worth noting ?

These have not been this low in price for about 3 years. A good entry level product, pretty neutral in character.

My old Kali LP-6 died a while back. How would these compare for as reference speakers?

The Uni-Fi are great speakers, but according to most reviews are not the easiest to drive. Will require a good bit of power to get the most out of those.
Unifi 2.0 UB52 owner here: I power them with my Yamaha Aventage 700 receiver. I've only pushed the receiver into thermal shutdown once, during a 3+ hour listening session at volumes that were too high, lol. They do require some power, but don't require a major amp investment. The Unifi speakers, because of their concentric drivers, produce a freakishly real holographic image. Few people have ever heard speakers that can pull them into the recording the way that these speakers can (when properly set up). I got them from Amazon Warehouse for $370, they were in brand new condition. Considering that I've only heard sound this real from $10,000+ audiophile speakers (Raidho, for instance), I'm now a huge fan of Elac.

I got this pair of speakers at the original price and owned them for over three years. And if you are an audiophile, please get a decent sound card for your computer, then the sound out of them will be really awesome. I highly recommend these bookshelf speakers.

2-way or 3-way refers to the speaker crossover configuration - a small electronic board inside the speaker.
2-way is simpler to build than 3-way, but shouldn't be used as a reference for speaker quality.
There are plenty of good 2-way speakers out there.
A 2-way crossover splits the audio signal into high and low frequencies. Highs go to tweeter(s), lows go to woofer(s). A 3-way splits into highs, mids and lows. High - tweeter(s), low - woofers, mids - the other drivers. The cutoff frequencies vary between manufacturers and speaker models.

Great price on these speakers but make sure you have something decent to drive them. I've found for the room I used them in about 80w was good. Cheap mini amps doing 30-35w I'd avoid. Imo

Maybe a dumb question but what's the difference between 2way vs 3way?
2 way = woofer and tweeter.
3 way = woofer, midrange, and tweeter

I would add that do not assume if a speaker has 3 drivers it is a 3 way speaker. A lot of 2.5 way speakers.

These are good. I wouldn't take them over the Kefs that were recently on sale but they were solid when I heard them demoed. Definitely an improvement over the first model.

How does a entry level work truck compare to an entry level Prius?

They don't compare.

Kali's are active (powered) studio monitors, designed for musicians, editors and music (semi) professionals, the Elac's are passive speakers (needing an amp) designed for your home /office / desk small sound system. They are not "reference speakers" as you mentioned in your second post.

Studio monitors don't belong in in a non-work environment (your basic consumer bedroom, office or living room). Consumer speakers do.
