2-way is simpler to build than 3-way, but shouldn't be used as a reference for speaker quality.
There are plenty of good 2-way speakers out there.
A 2-way crossover splits the audio signal into high and low frequencies. Highs go to tweeter(s), lows go to woofer(s). A 3-way splits into highs, mids and lows. High - tweeter(s), low - woofers, mids - the other drivers. The cutoff frequencies vary between manufacturers and speaker models.
3 way = woofer, midrange, and tweeter
3 way = woofer, midrange, and tweeter

They don't compare.
Kali's are active (powered) studio monitors, designed for musicians, editors and music (semi) professionals, the Elac's are passive speakers (needing an amp) designed for your home /office / desk small sound system. They are not "reference speakers" as you mentioned in your second post.
Studio monitors don't belong in in a non-work environment (your basic consumer bedroom, office or living room). Consumer speakers do.
