Quick math assuming you are ok with Visible/Mint at $30/mo - overpaying by $45/mo for 36=$1620, that's what you are paying for the "free iphone".

A $1000 phone will have $333 payoff value left after 24 months. You can trade that in for $480 iPhone 14 pro value right now. So if you buy out the iPhone 13 Pro for $333 from Att at 24months you'll still come out ahead by $147
So none of the people are loosing out.
I guess this is only true for iPhone. Android users are screed as their devices fall off the cliff
iPhone 13pro with ATT shows a current trade in value of $320; $160 difference from what your described.
So in the end, as long as values stayed the same, you'd be paying $13 to buy out the device after 24months.

We have family plan with three lines and wanted to add a fourth line. Went to Costco store. They do not have free phone without trade in for adding a new fourth line. The promotion they have at store is $100 Costco gift card and $100 in bill credits and free activation for adding a new line. Phone will come in 5 days. Adding a fourth line for $28 per month. Got the iPhone 15 pro and will be trading in Samsung galaxy phone. So phone comes to $4.67 per month for 36 months after trade in.
Upgrade offer at store
$100 Costco gift card and $50 upgrade discount.
If not I would hold out for that one as you get it free.
Apple will give me $580 for that phone and won't lock me in on plans.
