For those of you who don't know what this is:

This is a small travel router that connects to an ethernet port of an existing network, OR can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network and used to create your own personal Wi-Fi network but this router uses a VPN to mask your traffic when used.

It can also be used on Visible to share a phone connection with multiple devices but you will be required to use a TTL hack to make it work.

There are a few ways, the one I use is:
1. Connect phone/laptop to captive login wifi.
2. Connect GL.iNet to power
3. Log in to GL.iNet web interace
4. Change GL.iNet router MAC address to the same as that of your phone/laptop.
5. Connect GL.Inet to hotel WiFi, and it'll work.

A big use for this is also when you have a hotel that charges for, and limits the number of devices that connect to wifi. This isn't as common in the US anymore, but still common internationally. Also, if you have a ton of electronics with you, having this would save you from having to reconfigure each device for the new SSID.

Side note, I have this and it works great, the VPN works well too.

I use GLiNet Shadow - lower speeds than this and no WiFi6 but much more compact and no special power adapter. Most hotels have limited speeds anyway so having higher thruput on router wont help you much.

For some questions asked earlier about captive login pages - essentially way these work is that you connect to Hotel Wifi thru these and all your devices on your Wifi created by this. First device to access net will get captive login page and once you authenticate - it will connect all devices on its network. This way you dont need to clone ur MAC - essentially hotel will note down this device MAC and will think this is the only device accessing their network for all your devices that connect via this device.

Have you ever considered the possibility that your particular unit isn't working quite the same as everyone else's?

I'm leaning toward the possibility that due to your lack of understanding, you did something to cause this or, at the very least, did nothing to try to correct it.

Again, this router isn't meant for the average consumer.

You have to tweak it to work as desired, so it's not impossible to imagine opening it up and making sure the heatsink is seated properly or figuring out why the processor is ramping up when it should supposedly be idle (according to you).

You've already demonstrated that this product isn't meant for you, so what are you doing here besides crapping all over it?

My shadow is still useful - I usually carry my Nest home device with me on travels and it doesnt support its own captive login and needs a connected WiFi network.

What special power adapter are you referring to?

It uses USB-C and works with any 15W power supply.

I have the Slate AX (which is currently the most powerful) and the damn fan never turns on. Lately it's been having issues and I think it's heat related.

I have an older version of this. It took me a while to setup the VPN connection and it was very confusing for me to upload a configuration file, but I eventually got it to work.

It's super helpful when I'm traveling with the family and we're staying at a hotel or something. I re-broadcast our home wifi SSID while we're traveling. Collectively, we have about 16 devices connected to wifi while traveling so it's very nice to setup the connection 1 time, and have all of the devices connected automatically to the wifi after.

You can also use GL.Inet GL-MT300N or GLAr150 or any other Glinet travel routers for visible. Lots of info about TTL scipts depending on how you connect your phone to it (USB is preferred or Wifi, I cannot get it to hide data usage using a powered USB to ethernet).

Maybe someone will enlight me, but I never really understood why buying something more powerful than the mini travel routers mentioned above (or equivalent) to get unlimited hotspot with visible or other carriers. They can handle 4 or 5G speed all right. The one with detachable antenna(e) can be retrofitted with larger antenna(e). I have used successfully a yagi 15dBi and a 19dBi flat panel I used to use whilst war driving a LONG time ago.
At least for me, I was trying to find one that would run VPN at reasonable speeds. Running VPN really drops the thruput, so you need a speedy CPU. If you arent running VPN, then you are right, the provider (hotel, cruise ship) is the limiting factor.

Bricks definitely. USB-A is cutting it close because this needs 3 amps at 5 volts, or 15 watts, and most USB-A chargers won't do more than 2.4A (12 watts) at that voltage. And that's assuming the right handshake to get even the full 12 watts.

The AXT1800 Slate can get 500mbps. This one is a bit slower.

Will this work for sharing in flight Wi-Fi on American Airlines?
Yes it would work for that purpose. But do keep in mind that I took 10 flights this year between Air France, KLM, American Airlines, and JAL and none of them had internet fast enough to be usable for even one user. YMMV but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I had an old version of this router for travelling with the family. With all the devices we typically bring along (phones, kindle, work laptop, etc.), it was a pain to get them on a WiFi in a hotel/rental and then remembering to remove that remembered connection from each device. Which you should do, especially with unencrypted hotel WiFi connections.

While this router had a nice range of very useful functions, the broadcast range was lackluster. It worked fine in a hotel room, but completely inadequate in a multi-room rental. Based on the top review, it looks like there are also some inherent WiFi latency problems when you connect this router to the WiFi as the source of your internet connection.

Therefore, please read reviews and understand the uses for this device, because it may not work for your situation.
