so what's the consensus on the airs now? I've seen so many issues with the display cables being damaged from normal use which causes the display to stop working. and now that they've been out for a while, it's becoming more apparent since it is "time" that was needed to see this issue. does anyone know if apple did anything in the m2 airs to prevent this? ppl say that the airs will last 5-6 years... well not if the display ribbon cable isn't properly protected and fails due to damage from normal usage. i'm sure an apple consumer will just be like "pay for the apple care" but then it's like... ??? i'm buying a product that is defective and apple care is basically required now? it's crazy how many ppl say apple products are quality products but then they always say you better get apple care tho... if it was quality.. u wouldn't need apple care

Just commenting on this my M1 Air with a shot screen. I closed it at my desk and woke up with a large black bar through my screen. Quoted $600-$800 to fix it. I can either try a cheap $200 eBay panel repair with the risk of breaking it or just suck it up and buy an M2. Either way, was pretty upset to have one of the most essential parts of this machine give up on me after two years. Hoping to hear something else about display fixes otherwise I'm going to have to suck it up and spend extra on AppleCare

just bought M2 Open Box Fair, what do you guys think? Does it come with the warranty, I bought it through Amex platinum, so it adds another year of warranty. Hope it was correct decision.

Just getting an opinion for your everyday user …

I am using a 2017 MacBook Pro. And I'm starting to see signs of slowing down but not totally unusable. iMessage does takes a few minutes to update every time I open it. Software updates will start to fade out. Would you upgrade to the M2 now or wait for the 2024 MBA at this point?

Perhaps if I do a factory reset I can get some more life out of it? Thoughts?
My only concern for that model is getting MacOS security updates. My mother still has an i5 Mac Mini, and when the security updates stop coming we'll replace it.

The thing I like about my M1 Air is battery life and speed. If you worry about charging your laptop get an M series Air.

I'm looking to replace a 2013 MacBook Air. It still gets security update. But the fan runs nonstop and it definitely is slowing down.

Question: if you have a bad experience with Apple's product and don't trust Apple's product. Why do you want to keep buying Apple?
Cause it is hard to get out of that eco system .. and new products with new operating systems require a learning curve

too slow? unless you're a power user you wont be able to tell the difference, and if you are a power user you should be looking at the MBP14, also when the m3 comes out it will be at least $1100 which is not a slick deal.
Their have been reports that apple limits the ssd speed in the 256 version of m2... Half the speed of the m1 actually with same config

It's a single nand chip but it still gets 1500 in speeds. The better dual nand chips gets about 2500-2900. You won't tell in real world use. Best way to see the speed difference is moving files to an external drive.

In reality it's all in your head and you are overthinking it.

12 GB is expected to be the new norm but yea apple is super stingy with ram, which is so cheap nowadays. I miss being able to upgrade myself.
8gb standard is setup to push many users to pull the trigger on high margin upgrades to 16GB which allows them to keep a low ($900) entry level price for a base model for those that are most price sensitive or constrained.

That's a big deal for value minded folks and future proofers. mkbhd recommends the HDD upgrade for that exact reason because a single NAND is slower for parallel memory swapping than dual NAND chips.

Seems like a cost cutting design flaw (256GB BASE config for a $1000 laptop) for no good reason.

The real deals are probably non-default configs (16GB RAM, 512GB HDD) as those are custom configured at Apple stores and are in more limited supply. Those will be Refurbs, but Apple Certified usually means they replace the battery with a fresh one.

You can probably see base model deals with this price over time as M3 phases into retail shelves.

Had to go with the M1. It's perfect for my needs, and that's clearance price. Thanks OP!

M1 is totally fine.

But I would opt for 512GB
