Because in reality the expiration date is only a suggested shelf life. The product doesn't know to just stop working on a given date. It's honestly one of the biggest scams to get people to buy a new product based on an expiration date. I work in supply chain and see so many items get tossed because of an expiration date. From a Harvard study: "90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date." (https://www.health.harvard.edu/st...20to%20use.) YMMV

How can you just extend an expiration date? Seems shady to me
The manufacturer has to pay to keep testing them for accuracy as they get older. I'm not a doctor, but some tests officially last 2 years and some less then 1.5 years. I'm pretty sure they all last at least two years and the 1.5yr marked ones just didn't spring for the continued long term evaluation of their tests.

Anecdotally, when I had COVID, tests expired months previously still showed a positive result.

should I pitch the testing kits that I have in my cupboard from over a year ago?
Might they be expired and order new ones?

Have there been random control trials of these tests yet? Because their accuracy has been brought under scrutiny and the manufacturers of these have not addressed the questions. If we're going to blow all this money on these "free" tests, we need data showing how effective they are. If people are relying on them, we need to know whether they work or not.

There is a link on the site for extended expiration dates. A lot have been extended a year out.

Why not keep the old ones, order a few new ones and then when you think you have cov, use both to see which one is correct - or incorrect. Who's to say?
