You only pay tax on the amount you pay for phone which is the difference with what they give you. So on that phone if it's 1100. Then tax is only on the part you pay
yeah i know im saying that back in the day when you signed a long contract you didnt have to pay sales tax. now they lock you in for 3 years and you still pay sales tax. lolLMAO

I pay $35/mo for unlimited with a family plan and got $830 towards an iPhone 15 pro vs $200 trade-in credit.
That's $1260 for 3 years of service and $170 for the phone.
$25 prepaid plan would be $900 for 3 yrs service and $800 for the same phone with $200 trade credit.

If you do the math, $1430 vs $1700.

*Have to pay taxes either way on the phone so it's silly to count that as a $100 negative toward choosing postpaid.
You have to factor in the fees/taxes and the BS "Economic Adjustment Surcharge" on Verizon postpaid. My $35 Verizon postpaid plan becomes $41.88 after fees/taxes.

My $25 Verizon prepaid plan stays at $25 if I use prepaid cards to reload.

So now the difference is $1678 vs $1700, pretty much the same cost-wise but on prepaid data is deprioritized so postpaid gets the nod for better service.

This only works on their pricier plans btw. If you have the Verizon plans that are not "Unlimited" then you get way less trade in unfortunately. I'm on a $30/mo plan and my trade in for my iphone XR is not $1000.
Why would you upgrade from an XR and stay on a low tier plan? If you're not going to leverage all the new 5G infrastructure, keep your old LTE phone.

If you do the math, you will end up better off if you buy a phone outright and get on a cheap prepaid plan. These types of lock in "deals" are intentionally only for expensive postpaid plans. I'm on the ATT 25 a month 300 a year plan and it has just as high cell tower priority as the postpaid plans do. Plus on top of 3 years of expensive plans, and the accompanying BS taxes and fees, you are forced to pay sales tax up front on a $800 plus phone. That's another ~$100 there.

TLDR: these "free" iPhone promos are for poor people and people who can't do basic math. The only person this is a "slick deal" for is the carrier.
Oh yeah. It's the cheap people that are poor paying $160/mo for unlimited gigabit speed 5G Ultrawide Band. Not the dude with a 7 year old pixel phone pinching pennies on a boost mobile pay by the gig plan that gets 320kb/s during peak usage. laugh out loud

Looking at this deal as a long-time Verizon's customer, but T-Mobile is looking attractive after visiting Costco today.

The trade-in offers at T-Mobile look similar to Verizon.

Plus there's a $150 Costco gift card per line. And $250 porting (for up to 2 lines.)

The sales person told me he can offer $200 porting credit for up to 4 lines. He can also offer a coupon for 20% off.

Moving 5 lines would be $750 ($150 x 5) and $800 ($200 x 4.) 20% off the Go5G Plus plan that comes with Netflix and Apple TV.

T-Mobile is 24 month financing compare to Verizon's 36 month financing.
T-Mobile looks attractive until you actually use it. Their coverage on the mountain west and west coast is awful. If you live in the same 5 block radius of some big east coast city, then it's acceptable. But you if actually get out and travel across the country, you'll see serious gaps between Verizon and T-Mobile. I lived through it for multiple years with my girlfriend.

Let's do the math on this one (for my case, feel free to plug in your own numbers)

I used the Verizon Taxes and surcharges estimator to guess at taxes/fees. https://www.verizon.com/support/t...estimator/

Verizon Unlimited Plus Plan (1 line) = $90 + 27.17 Taxes and fees = 117.17 - 10 autopay credit = $107.17/month
107.17 x 36 months = $3856.12 - $1399 = $2459.12 (Approx. 68.31 monthly bill for 3 years)
Plus upfront tax (8.25%) 2459.12 + 115.42 = 2574.54 - 250 Costco cash card = 2324.54 + 350 (Current street value of my iPhone 11 pro max 256GB)

Total value = 2674.54

Versus

Buying new iPhone 1514.42 (including tax)
Keeping my current Visible plan $35/month (including taxes/fees) x 36 = 1260
Sell current iPhone myself -$350

Total Paid = 1514.42 + 1260 - 350 = 2424.42 or 2774.42 (if I decide to keep my phone)

For me personally, it makes more sense to buy the phone outright and use my current prepaid plan. Not to mention the freedom that comes with not being in a contract. I could see this being a good deal for someone with 4+ lines though.

I think if nothing else this shows that these "free phone" deals aren't really a deal. They just build the cost of the phone into your contract. The people who really get screwed are the ones who stay on a phone plan without any sort of active promotion.
You should try doing math on your low prioritization, low speed, data capped, prepaid plan. Some of us actually use our phones. Having 5G UWB with 1ms latency and 1gig+ speeds in most major cities now is a massive quality of life improvement.

But it's not a contract. A contract is something that is binding, this isn't. If you upgrade your phone or leave the carrier, you give up the bill credits and you have to pay the remaining balance of the phone.

Back when they subsidized the phones, that was a true contract as they could charge you an ETF as well as require you to pay off the full balance of the phone. You signed a document.

24 vs. 36 mos is just a way to reduce the monthly payment. 1 year more, no big deal. I've been with Verizon for 10+ years. I don't switch providers often, not worth it to me. If you do, then yeah, that's on you to figure out how you purchase a $1k device. The 36 mos bill credits to get a $1k+ device for $11/mo 0% interest fits my needs.
You know what they call the paperwork you sign, when you finance a phone thru your carrier? Installment AGREEMENT (fancy term for contract). The only difference is that carriers changed the contract from the plan to the phone instead. Just as you used to be able to get out of the old contract by paying a termination fee (which was essentially the subsidized portion of the phone), now you're just paying off the phone. You're literally signing a contract AGREEING to lose your bill credits if you pay off the phone early (which means you wasted your trade in, which may be 6-800 dollars if you're trading in an iPhone 13/14 pro max).

I understand 2 years, since they are in the business of making money, but 3 year contracts on any service is just insanity.

For 1000$ credit, you need 11Pro or higher pro to be traded in.

Verizon will literally take any phone since iPhone 3G in any condition (except for swollen battery and iCloud locked or stolen phones).
But it is 24 Months not the crazy 36 like Verizon

I was on a grandfathered VZ plan and the quality of service was horrible. I think it was just deprioritized. Many times the status will be 4 bars and 5G, but no data flow. Decided it was enough of this BS and moved.

The $35 Visible+ plan he's talking about has UWB and 50 gigs of priority data.
