I just received the Telecaster yesterday. It really is a great instrument at a great price. It's an instrument you do not need to put any money into and would last a lifetime. Everybody has an opinion on what is worth their dollar but this a great deal either way.

And you probably are also believing higher, fuller setup comes with high prices and it doesn't (on new guitars unless itemized, and complicates with some NEW fret sprout.)
"Setup out of the box" you mean... made correctly in the first place, right?

I really don't understand the expectation that it's totally ok to buy a guitar that costs, $500, $1500, $2500... and it's totally ok for frets to be installed incorrectly, the guitar neck to be out of shape, and the intonation to just generally be screwed up.

If Gibson or Fender made cars I expect they'd come out of the factory with 3 wheels sometimes and people would be like "yea that's ok, the 4th one's sitting in the trunk. Just need to pay $5000 for the dealer setup!"

1. Frets are pressed into the fret board when made. Even with a super balanced setup done, with your action height preferences then humidity over just shipping can effect the wood pressures and a fret can sprout up. This happens on some new guitars regardless of cost. Plus, when you oil your fret board surface and do not wipe it in a minute or a couple then the oil can get down under your frets and may loosen adhesive, causing fret sprout.

2. All guitars are finished and then setup to a point. Because of personal preferences and even a desire to setup ones own guitar then some believe it is best leave the super fine setup to the owner, or value added music store. And a super pro setup level can of course effect your cost.

After hearing numerous reports now I am suggesting; just about all brand new guitars are arriving with what we might call medium extra or super setup. No matter the price point, and I'm saying only under the case where brand new and itemized setup details are not specified.

So any honest report could unknowingly be swayed good or bad, due to fret Sprout or expecting such a finished and high level of super setup that anything imperfect is sent back. [And do not fail to send stuff back; that is really bad].

And I'm with you on expecting finishing quality to be very high; and would like zero to do, for high prices with no slick deal discounts. However; since it's so easy for me to level frets and polishing them and check the critical nut balances etc, then it would not bother me to spend just a few minutes perfecting SOME of the setup. This does not mean inexpensive guitars need more! We are seeing the opposite. SOME fine setup DIY would let me know where it started and decide how far to go, custom to my fingers. Mine is like butter. You can press as hard as you want and flick down the fret-board ends and it's smooth as butter, no problem. And all the rest of a super setup in the balances. I would expect the whammy springs not likely to be finished in firm but balanced tension, to my custom liking. That's part of typical custom setup.

I keep saying setup, from mid to amazing; because just the word setup could be practically nothing. Just part of the build, so it can be super setup. I am suggesting new guitars all come with some setup somewhere in the middle. I suspect usually about the same. And expect SOME more than that, if pro(or certain verbiage) type setup is advertised. Or included from a music store(usually higher prices). This more setup time, than done in the build WILL cost you more somehow, and somewhere. So you might as well finish it yourself and know how to reset the balances ongoing; like in very humid places. How is all on YouTube, if you choose wisely.

So when a NEW guitar is promised a professional type of setup, like the inexpensive DLX models; but for about $49 (modern components, woods and better setup) more, over the Cali Classic's with decent setup (and just fine classic stuff) then I would expect very little to do. I might have a high tolerance for just a little setup (lower medium level?) on a nice $49 ($59?, $39?) slick guitar deal. But reports say they are better than that. Like their Tele's style was! And I have no problem (freewill) for those who ONLY want setup all done for them and pay for it. A music store deal awaits. I would try a DLX for certain, for that person, with their money back if not liked. Just remember stores saw you coming and have been at this a while. It will cost more.

So again the first thing you need to know with any report is what was the real problem, or delight. They might be all upset over nothing. Or the opposite. And verify; don't assume.

Would this be a good guitar for someone who never touched a guitar and is thinking about using Rocksmith+ to learn?

Yea, people have answered that exact question several times in this thread. This guitar is a good guitar. There are other good guitars you can get for less if you like them.

It's pretty normal for a guitar to "require setup" (an additional cost of like $50-100-ish), so remember to consider that as well.

The price is also very very good for this particular Fender brand guitar. Again, there are other good guitars which may be "just as good" for a lower price. There's a lot of discussion about that in this thread.

My question is explicitly about using "Rocksmith" with this guitar, which I have not seen mentioned anywhere in this thread.
