Good price. However I recommend spending a few bucks more to get a Franklin Sensor that has multiple sensors to find studs.
No. I've had several Zircons (last one was a gift, one of their top models), and they just aren't reliable. I literally have better luck knocking on the wall and listening for the stud. It has worked before, but I think it's terrible on thicker drywall. Sure, this is a good price, but I'm honestly not sure that the stud sensor is "better than nothing".

I bought a Zircon and it was crap. False readings or no readings all the time. I returned it to HD and bought a Franklin. Highly recommend the Franklin bar stud finder. Never a bad reading.

Just a side comment. Some of you immature posters need to grow up with all the grade school comments about being a stud. Wish the mods would just delete them all.

Just bought & used this Zircon model yesterday:
https://www.amazon.com/Zircon-StudSensor-e30-Electronic-Finder/dp/B00A2LRDE8/ref=asc_df_B00A2LRDE8/?... [amazon.com]

Successful, I'd say...60-75%. The walls of my office aren't standard 16" nor 24" studs, I was tired of poking hollow holes so I bought this out of desperation at local hardware store.

Based solely on this video alone, this HD55 is the Home Depot version of the A100 (which is probably the Amazon version) in this video (You can see they have LXX series of finders on their site that are exclusively sold at Lowe's). The A100 did a really good job at the price even compared to the more expensive stud finders. This particular deal is almost half the price tested in the video+has more stuff included. If you don't have a stud finder and need one on hand, this is a solid deal IMO

I have plaster and lath walls (old 1920s townhome)… I've tried stud finders before and they didn't work.

I know I can use anchors instead of trying to find a stud to drill into, but What's the most effective tool or method to ensure prior to drilling that I'm not going to hit a water/gas pipe, electrical wires or something else lurking behind the walls? I get really anxious about it lol.

Is this one actually useful/effective?

The stud sensor is not very good. Spend more money to save yourself the frustration.

Without spending a fortune on a 'pro' tool I'd recommend the Walabot tool. The v1 only works with Android but I think v2 does iPhone or Android. I picked up a v1 off eBay for like $30 and bought a cheap Samsung track phone burner to use with it and it's been really good. It's not perfect but it's by far the best option I've come across for a use case like yours and mine where you have no idea what else could be behind the wall. I've tried a few advanced stud finders that have different LED colors to indicate if a possible stud/wire/pipe but it's been like playing roulette. Good luck!

Thanks.

I tried this but because there are nails all along the lath (wooden beams) it kept picking up all the nails. Didn't work.

Not a bad price for a cheap sensor. But if you need to find studs often then go buy a Franklin. Are franklins perfect? No, but they have for me proven quite reliable. No more marking edge of studs to find center, franklins find it for you

I also have one of these and now drywall needing replaced also. At one point I just started measuring 16 in. out from where I knew/hoped there was one. Lol.
