I'd lean more towards these built with snap ring retention instead of any of the ratchets with the two rear screws (on the back of the head).
SATA 1/4-Inch Drive 72-Tooth Quick-Release Ratchet with a Teardrop Head, Polished Chrome Finish - ST11971U https://a.co/d/cpygFuD

And you can get the 3/8 for like $12, which is the better deal and a bit of a steal at $12.

I like this guy for his teardowns.

here's his teardowns of the 3/8 SATA.

What's the benefit of the snap ring versus screws?

The front screw ones are arguably the worst (screws entering into the cover plate and screwing into the ratchet body). If you strip out a screw in the ratchet body it's basically trash.

The rear screw ones aren't bad per se. They screw into the retaining plate so if you strip out a screw hole you have to find a new retaining plate.

If you see a screw in the center of the cover plate, it's probably holding the selector on. Avoid these, they fall off the most and the internals are usually a bad or subpar design.

But that's not what bothers me. What bothers me is if you use the ratchet frequently half the time at least one of the screws will back out and get lost. They should be blue loctited but they will do it eventually. I've had to tighten several screws from the factory.

The snap ring isn't going to fall out, and you won't strip it out. Generally the snapring ratchets are also lower profile. This design is generally made by Apex tool group in Taiwan (Apex tool group brands include GearWrench, SATA, Crescent).

Not saying the other styles are bad, I just feel that the snapring design is superior if you're getting them at the same price.

As a budding mechanic, my son had two of the screws fall out on one of his no-name ratchets at work, after only a month of use. I suspect a snap-ring-retained version would not have that issue.

I don't think the problem is the inherent design of using screws vs. snap ring, it's as you said "no-name" that is the issue. I have some Snap-On ratchets that I inherited from my grandfather that are 70 years old, and I have had for the last 30, that use screws, and they have never come loose.

The capri tools ratchet is clearly better made than the sata. Beefier cover plate, paw, and drive gear which translate to being able to handle more torque. Only thing sata has going for it is its slimmer design.

The plate isn't load bearing, it's only thicker in the capri / that design to give the screws a couple mm to hold onto.

Pawl size in the capri is unnecessary (how chunky it is / more teeth would be more better), the failure point (if it isn't the anvil) in this design will be the teeth of the drive gear or teeth of the pawl. But in either design that failure point will be well beyond what you should be using a ratchet for.

Luckily for us project farm has tested these. Crescent and SATA are the same ratchet. TLDR: SATA/crescent have better arc swing and 50 lbs more force before failure than capri. (3/8 in models tested)

Amazon currently has the 3 piece SATA set in stock for $28. obviously they aren't unobtainium like snatch on but you get 80% of the performance for 5% of the price.

Thanks for the info. The PF results are surprising and yet quite valuable. Looks like that set of sata ratchets will be bought in the near future.
