Nope! owned couple fanless PCs are working super good .. all can hold sustained loads
Fanless PCs are possible without throttling but unless you want something gigantic, the N100 isn't the CPU for that

Cooling seems to be a recurring issue on these cheap little machines....I wonder how hard it would be to open one up and stick some heat sinks inside to help with that. Plenty of $10 heat sinks on Amazon in various sizes.

Very easy to open. There's a quick release tab to take the top cover off which exposes the 2.5" bay with sata connector and ram. Remove 6-8 Philips screws to access the remainder of the board/components

N100 actually is designed for low cost, low power consumption device. there are many fanless versions in Chinese market, it just takes time to reach US market at good price

I agree, just that there will be sacrifices in performance

What real world applications would someone use this for? It seems under powered for some uses and over spec'd for others.

Web/FTP server?

For $180, you can buy an optiplex with an 8th Gen i5 off of eBay. Later on you can slap a cheap video card in it and have a decent PC. Even better you get a 1 year warranty.

Tons of videos on YouTube of people doing this.

The only reason I can see people buying these are for niche purposes.
No the optiplex advice no longer holds, the mini pc's are simply too capable now that the old dells only make sense at ewaste prices, they are still 3x over priced at minimum and even more once you factor in the upgrades needed to polish a turd. For basic grandma pc or appliance pc only this kind of stuff makes sense now.

For $150 though it has pretty good specs and it has 4.3/5 stars on Amazon with 703 ratings. Yeah you could go for the Beelink Mini S12 Pro that your talking about and it looks like that deal is still going on but its $20 higher than this deal and the only differences in the specs that I see are Wifi 6 (vs wifi 5) and the Beelink has an M.2 SSD instead of a SATA SSD.

Edit: Actually nevermind it looks like after reading the product description on the Kamrui it also comes with an M.2 SSD.
the downgrade version of the Beelink is also available for $139.99 for the sacrifice of an N95 CPU instead of the N100 and Wifi 5 instead of Wifi 6. more than sufficient for the basic browsing and streaming i plan to do on my TV. thanks for the link!

Yeah the reason I ordered one was because it was cheap and uses less than 10 watts. I want to use it as a cryptocurrency miner that's going to be generating $0.50-$1 a day in crypto.
Could you really use one of these web browser pcs for a energy efficient crypto miner? Links please

How would this compare to a machine with a i5-8400 and 16gb ddr3 ram? My father is looking for something to replace his HP prodesk (wants a smaller footprint). Multitasking is somewhat important as he typically browses the net, has YouTube open with iTunes for music etc. at the same time. Also, can this play video games like Heroes 3 from GOG.com ok? Is the igpu relatively equivalent? As long as it can play project 1999 when I'm visiting I'm happy.

The only time the Optiplexes make sense if if you need storage space. One of these requires all USB drives so a Plex server isn't ideal because you'll need to add a $$$ multi-drive enclosure or several drives for a cable filled mess

Used $100 NAS holding ssds. This with Intel quicksync for hardware encoding as a server. You have a plex server for 1/2 the cost of a modern, equivalent-spec NAS.
